Forcing truck drivers into retirement | Ask The Trucker

When is a professional truck driver too old to drive? This question is now being raised even more, based on the ruling that airline pilots now have a mandatory retirement at the age of 65. In a battle that dates back to the 1960′s, commercial airline pilots were to retire at age 60. The ruling, which took effect in February 2007, actually raised their retirement age to 65. Now, many want the same ruling to apply to professional truck drivers.

We keep living longer and longer. But with no secure retirement now people are in danger of working well past retirement age. This leads to a multitude of problems. Including how old is to old for whatever.

Conway used to have a pension plan but no one wanted to fight to keep it.

More garbage from you. Plenty wanted to do something. They made a half hearted effort and failed.

Maybe they will try again. Doubt it. These people aren't willing to sacrifice for the greater good.

Just greedy. me me me All about that paycheck.

I guess that's the big difference. This place isn't a career. It's just a job.

At 74 (retired Teamster with 36 years service at age 55) I am still driving school bus. As long as you do the job safely and pass physical they let you drive. We have 200 plus drivers and many are late 60s-early 70s. It is a great retirement job with lots of retired truckers, firemen, policemen in our barn. Our barn starts at $16.73 to $23.00 with OT after 40,great benefits and only work 180 days a year! You also earn pension benefits with S.E.R.S. which is based on your average 3 years best salary. After you are there a number of years you make over $40.000 with OT and field trips and best of all if weather is too bad you stay home and get paid!!!! Check it out when you get tired of freight industry and retire. GOOD LUCK!

When I retired, I RETIRED. My travels don't include any school busses.

My mandatory retirement from the LTL world is gonna be 55. It's nice being home, it's good money, but it is a killer on your body. Kids are out the door soon so I'm either gonna find a short highway run where i can be out a couple days and home on weekends, or go back on the long road, take momma along and she can be the swamper...
