FedEx Freight | Nine dead in I-5 crash involving tour bus & FedEx Freight

I am willing to bet he had a lead axle brake malfunction and overheat, touched his brake pedal and the DOT mandated brake override system applied all the tractor brakes to the max the ABS would allow. He would then have about a 20 ton missile that was almost impossible to steer. Once he hit the dirt, the computer would have kept applying the tractor brakes to the max ABS permitted and he would have little or no steering ability with the trailers pushing from behind.

Quite possibly... My understanding is that he was bringing back empties

Since this is going in another thread here also, I will post this here. It appears he was driving the 2007 Volvo like I totaled. Using your years of experience as a driver, extrapolate what happens when you have a tractor brake malfunction that triggers a wheel slide and engages the system. Shoving in the clutch will not help you recover unless you are incredibly lucky. Of course I'm sure the gov't's solution won't include the discovery their mandate to install these systems caused the accident. Instead, they will use it to implement a bunch more regulations some bureaucrat wants because a company he is associated with will profit from the new demand.

Why are there no skid marks????

Found out this morning that the lead trailer had four pallets of ???

VWAGGS, we've asked people not to speculate on this thread, thanks for paying attention.

Decided to hold comment...

You can expect that from a news hungry lame press that he may of fell asleep. But if the police or highway patrol said that he or she should be reprimanded...

I got in a bit of a an argument via Twitter with a local "journalist" who kept referencing " Fedex" in all her tweets when I pointed out that her posts would be just as factual and relevant without mentioning only Fedex.
Eventually, she let it slip that it was ok to mention Fedex but not the bus line "because Fedex caused the crash". I pointed out tho her that she was being irresponsible, jumping to conclusions and ultimately revealing her bias against the trucking industry. She was not happy with me. :- )

I have been responding to every Yahoo story defending the FedEx driver and being critical of the DOT and this computer override system. The stories went from indirectly implying it was his fault to we need more gov't reg's on buses, to disappearing all together.

CNN is an acronym for the Communist News Network. The fact is, because FedEx is Non-Union, they are being crucified. I would almost go as far as saying if it was UPS, the headline would have been "Tractor Trailer hits bus". All pics would have been confiscated. But... it was us, so the headline was "FedEx truck hits bus and kills 10' Then they emphasize that it was a bus of low income, minority students who were visiting a college. It is the perfect story for CNN and MSNBC. If it was a UPS hitting a bus of wealthy white kids it would have been a non story to CNN. It is what it is.

Practice self control...your sense of aggrieved conservative entitlement is showing on so many levels. Typical conservative victimhood syndrome.

Is this something than can be found out/proved by the investigation? How often can this happen? Has this happened before that anybody knows of?

The trucks computer would give relative information. In this case it probably burned up. I believe it happened to me, which is how I discovered it. In my case the truck did not react like it should when a lead axle brake malfunctioned, the truck jackknifed for no apparent reason. I have recovered from black ice patch jackknifes that were much worse before. I wanted to know why this happened and researched it. Pushing in the clutch and removing drive train drag does not affect it. Steering out the the jackknife makes the computer brake more. Our company does not read computers I was advised.

Yes...extremely....it is obviously a mechanical failure. The lack of skid marks on part of Evans has me completely convinced this is equipment failure. I hope they tackle this with an open mind. I don't feel this a fatigue issue whatsoever....
Is anyone besides me growing weary of seeing the words FedEx truck, bus, and slammed in the same sentence?

What happened to "Cab on fire before crash" witness accounts? Why are investigators doing everything possible to sweep those reports under the rug? An eye witness account can't be confirmed as fact but recreating the scene will be?
Was that older Volvo retrofitted with DEF emissions system? If so. Did it malfunction? Are authorities afraid if they look into that they'll find out half the trucks on the road today are potential accidents waiting to happen? Imagine the public's response if they knew.
Before some of you jump on me that I'm a dumbass.....I admit I don't know a lot about those systems. I do know they get extremely hot. I know we've had minor problems with some of them not working properly. And there seems to be a rash of truck fires on the sides of the road. Just something to think about.
