Since switching over to digital logs running extra board has not been as consistent or enjoyable as it used to be. My family wants me home more but I need to be confident that ill get enough work to support everything. So my question is being new to the city how many hours can a guy who just wants to get all the work he can Monday through Friday get? What are the winters like when things slow down? I'd appreciate all the input I can get from you guys while I weigh the decision.

As a fairly new city driver here (since November) I haven't missed a day of work. There were days that due to weather we didn't work maybe 4? That being said there are tons of hours and I have noticed that we move a ton of freight. City is not difficult here as most of the freight is just pallet jack to the tail or bump a dock, I personally have not seen much inside delivery freight, The only thing I gripe about is the equipment is old and worn out, this needs to update, As a driver who has moved freight and equipment for 20 + years I can see how high turnover happens due to equipment.

Depends a great deal on your location. One terminal might have a ton of food houses, (sort & seg) another might be in an older area with docks built for smaller trailers. You could be in a rural area with lots of windshield time, or in a large industrial area and bounce around like a ping pong ball. Work does vary seasonally, January, February, and March typically slowest but you get that on extra/hub/line/ too. So if it's slow in one, it's slow in all. Except maybe extra, you get sent to the freight? Yea, the equipment is older but as long as the radio works I don't mind, I'd rather have more pay then better equipment, both would be better lol. But then as a younger driver starting later, you might jump into a nice truck from a line/hub guy (fuel it up!)

I seldom seen my family when I ran the city. They were in bed when I got home and just getting up when I left.

Mildew that's one reason why I don't really want to do city. I figure if I got a line haul run depending on what run it is I could see the family more. Start at 9 pm and come back around 5am like my dad use to do. Go home go to bed and get up around 2 or 3 and be home in the evening with the family
