We are so short of drivers in DEN and can't find any drivers, the company is advertising for drivers on the local radio stations. Why is it so hard for a company the size of SAIA to find drivers? I think I know but, I want to see what others think.

Poor CSA scores......Bad MVR's with tickets and accidents.....DAC reports showing failed drug screens among other things..........For every 10 that apply only 1 makes the grade........Good drivers are hard to find....Saia can afford to be picky.....It pays big dividends.

It's a industry wide problem...all the ltls are starting to have problems...I've been in this business 22 yrs and never seen it this bad before...

Maybe csa IS thinning the heard..lol. Haven't seen pay skyrocket though

Who wants to work 70 hrs a week, every week, erratic schedule and living by the phone?

Up here in Ft. Wayne, every company is advertising for drivers. Read in the paper this week that the shortfall is 236,000 drivers. CenturyClass is right. Plus, the BabyBoomers are starting to retire and the younger generation has a sense of entitlement and do not think they have to wait for top dollar. They deserve what you have earned now and not later. For most, the monetary rewards of this job(with the right company)are worth it but only if your family life can survive, also.

I fully understand the safety measures we have put in place and support them and I know they have to be strict and enforce them but I think some of the minor things drivers get written up for are keeping people away I men you get three our four little incidents on your record and your gone . It seems like they are firing drivers faster than they are hiring them

I start training tomorrow. What are some of the more common reasons that drivers get written up for?

They are all things you can prevent you just gotta be on your game 110% of the time #1 hard brakes the camera on the new trucks will come on record it and send it to safety #2 lane deviations I don't know for sure if they are monitoring this 100% now but I've heard of some getting written up for it #3 speeding DO NOT GET ANY TICKETS IN THE TRUCK OR PERSONAL VEHICLE #4 be on time as much as possible sometimes your late and can't help it but try this goes for dispatching on time too. #5 keep your trailer locked with padlocks or bolt seals even when it's empty I wouldn't put bolt seals on empties so make sure you have your locks # 6 do not have ANY ACCIDENTS # 7 wear your seatbelt #8 do not tailgate # 8 MOST IMPORTANT SLEEP SLEEP SLEEP!!!!!
I'm sure there is a lot I've forgotten but these other guys will add to this I'm sure

If you start tomorrow all I can say is good luck and watch your back constantly. Do not let your guard down. I and when you do, they will pounce. Can be literally anything. Locks on trailers. Pre and post trip. Smoking in truck. These are just a few examples. I will not name names, but there are terminal managers out there who are dumb as a bag of hammers and don't understand that trucking companies depend on drivers. Because they fail to recognize this fact, they fail as managers and their terminals show it. There should be a large pay increase coming. I personally know if one terminal whose city drivers got a $2.20 pay increase.

Thanks for the replies fellas.

I've always been a "by the book" kinda guy so I hope to just do as I'm told and keep my nose clean.

Hmm this thread is concerning me. I start back at saia next week as a linehaul driver.

They have to write that person up for going over on hours. It's the only way they could possibly try to explain it if they were ever to get audited by the DOT... Incidentally I wonder how a driver tells DOT and OSHA about all the vull**** that goes on at this company...hmmm
