First question I have is how is the wild board run. How long does it usually take to get a bid. Is the sacramento yard a good place to work out of. I have a lot of experience working an extra board, just don't know what the differences are between wild and extra. Thx.

I don't work out of SAC, but I do sometimes meet a SAC wild driver. To answer your question, our terminal runs the wild board first in first out. You will be getting extra runs, covering drivers out sick or on vacation. I know we are busy system wide. I assume you are considering the Linehaul board. You might not have a assigned tractor at first and always bring a overnight bag with you. Three of our wild board just got bids on our last bid. I also know that some newer drivers received their own bid in California on their last bid. It depends on how many new runs are added. I hope this helps. Good luck.

More bid runs are being added all the time all over the system ... this is resulting in less available freight left over to run system wide .... just something to consider in making your decision. It will also make things really bad for this type driver and some schedule drivers should freight levels drop .. ie sitting at home ...

Just fill out an app and just go for it. Every wild guy I've seen hired this year becomes an instant millionaire. Didn't use to be like this, guys use to sit but most work 5-6 days a week.

I agree with Billylo. There is a lot of freight out there. Most all of our wild board is turning in 10 to 12 hours. Also if you're looking at SAC, when drivers get laid over due to snow going east or north, the wild board is called to cover the runs. Also more bids means more vacations to cover. Our top wild driver pretty much covers the vacations. We are growing besides. Look at the new terminals being built or just opened. I say go for it. This is the best time of the year to get on. Also run anything they give you.

Thanks for the replies, I have a lot to consider. I'm at one of your competitors at top pay with a good bid, just want to be with a solid company with a good financially secure future for my family. I know ODFL is a good place to work as I know some of their drivers, but they are out of a different yard. I just hope I can handle another long stay on as an extra/wild driver.

I'm about to graduate from private CDL school. The linehaul manager came to our school in lieu of a recruiter. After much consideration, I decided that OD is my first choice. I'll be applying for the L/H position. He said that wed-sun shifts are more plentiful, apparently the mon-fri shifts fill up quickly during bidding. I could care less which shift I take. I'll need to maintain at least an 85% grade point average in order to be considered once I graduate and pass my state road exam. I already have my hazmat, double/triples, and tank endorsement, having took the tests the same time I took my general knowledge and air brake test for my permit. Just waiting on clearance from the feds - hopefully that will come around the time I get my license (I got finger printed back in early May). The L/H manager told me that bidding is for shifts, that they operate on a first come first serve basis, like the other gentleman mentioned above. He also said that in his 12 years at the terminal I'll be applying at, they've never laid off a L/H driver. Because of company growth, they have tons of job openings for L/H, P&D, and combo drivers. Our family is very excited for this opportunity right out of school! It's my intention to stay with the company for long term employment. Every driver I talk to says to take the opportunity, and I hope it works out!

best of luck to you&wish you the best.

thanks kenneth! i just wanted to chip in w/ info for the op, based on what the L/H manager said for the terminal at my location

Curious if they ever hire any road drivers out of the Little Rock yard? Also do they plan on expanding into new areas of Arkansas or just running out of Little Rock? Thanks for your time on this issue.

Drop by, introduce and fill out an app! Worst they could do is tell ya to go away! Bet they've got a need for a line driver position this time of year.

I filled out an app about a year ago but all they were looking for in Little Rock was city drivers. Already ran the city years ago, too old and tired for that. lol

Only at OD can you run city and become rich!! Should've taken it.

My buddy makes it sound like UPSF is where you will become rich. City at OD sounds easier then a few other ltl companies. At saia you have starbucks

Was considering going to talk HR at Kansas City KS (edwardsville?) about employment for linehaul... Do you run off a recap or do they require a reset every week?
Ive been employed by another LTL company for the last 19 years, linehaul and city P&D. Also competed at the Kansas TDC , placed fourth in tanker this year and 3rd in flatbed two years ago. went to nationals in 2010 in tanker. was seriously considering a change. My thoughts are keeping the wheels turning legally and making $.
Was thinking about spring of 2015 but dont want another 50 drivers above me by that time.

toejam, either recap or restart. 2500 to little under 3500 in 5 days out off KCY, so most just restart, only 5 days a week required, volunteers always asked for 6th, yet not required. Been swamped lately, I'll be running extra tonight, bit of bottleneck FRI, so waived off and volunteered for tonight. Out of TOP, so probably bobtail to KCY, out of empties, and run a STL or DSM or to PAR, something tonight.

Runs depends 75,000 to 107,000 +. I got schedule that I prefer that runs between 518 to 600 miles a night, variance and numerous terminals. average 560 miles and 45 extra pay nightly. Could run a Goodland, yet don't like the long set in truck constant same routine, (698 daily) each their own. Plus somebody has to fed the WIC drivers. They get grumby without their freight. LOL. I do 95 to 97 yearly without extra volunteering. Should be getting another raise in Sept with our numbers this year.
