The Danger of Forcing Truck Drivers to Drive Sleep-Deprived EXPOSED

Yeah because I'm sure NONE of our drivers are tired as h3ll after working 12 and 14 hours a day. The speeding and the tailgating are just compounding the issue

I would be willing to give work rules in a contract. Would you? If you want 8 and skate go work on a factory floor.

Whatever ...I've been in LTL for 20 years....the factory floor comment you can can take and do something with! I know darn well that our drivers come in on most days looking beat to hell by the end of the week. Especially with supervisors pushing the "I got you for 14 hours attitude!" And then pushing the 16 hour rule on your butt once a week just because it LEGAL. Pay me overtime after 8 and overtime after 40 and I will consider
Having a different outlook on it. They work the crap outta you because they don't have to kick in the extra money for the extra risk.

If your 14 hours in, your day is done..you dont have a very good argument.

Attitudes like yours is what is going to mess it up for the rest of us who like making the good money. Bid the city if you don't like linehaul. Also, it's up to you to get proper rest..not the company. Be responsible. They tell us we cant work past 14..never make us.

I guess I will try telling them that the next time they tell me to use the 16 hour rule...
You need to come down to the Deep South and try on some of the BS they dish out here....

I sat and waited for a work call for 15 yrs. 5 months and 20 days, as did many of my Brother's and Sister's, before getting a start time. There were many times I was not feeling 100%, but you get it done safely

This Driver is just like the rest of his Generation, better suited to staying in their Parents basement, playing X-box.

Another Legacy of the Kennedy, Carter Deregulation scheme.

I was a phase 2 trainer. Maybe I got lucky pro1 ... All of my "students" had years had more experience than I. I went from phase 1, to my own truck, to driving for a guy that had a lot of trucks with no drivers and he wanted to keep his trucks rolling. The lady I was supposed to team with ended up being too sick to drive so I ended up "training" and I learned so much about truck driving from some of those guys. One of the best experiences I've ever had!

Remember the white pills with the red and green specks on them that were advertised on the back of magazines in the late 70's "? I used them. 2 pills and driving from Chicago to the Truckstop where I-44 and hwy 69 in Big Cabin oklahoma without a break was a cake walk

Try chicago to albequrqe and take a 6hr nap and on to la , i know lotta small places doin that. Or chi to the east coast twice by thursday reegularly ocasionally 3times a week

what i underlined...

is what i was pretty much alluding to, but just didn't say it...

it is/was NOT my intention (or contention) to say he wasn't allowed to sleep, it was my saying that he already had 1-10 hour break, then an ADDITIONAL 10 hour break, and he was saying he was "up all that 10 hours, and didn't get any additional sleep"...

to wit i responded...BS.......

as i also said, he didn't know how to play the game, and either JUST TAKE a nap, or call in and say, traffic, accident, construction, is slowing him down, and he "might be, a tad late"...(many things i had to para-phrase here)..

which led me to say a "typical cry-baby, newbie".....

what "irked" me the most (i think), in the news story, or farce of a story, was him folding his arms across his chest as the reporter said, "he was happy he exposed the industry problems".....

creative editing, crying like a little frigging baby, and as YOU say....."better suited for to staying in his parents basement"....

fit him to a "tee".......

i am NOT against, proper rest, sleep, etc......never was, never will be..

only totally against BS from newbies.....

always was, always will be.....

man up, buck up, or get the "F" out.....(or how about DON'T EVEN GET IN...?????)

you are NOT needed, since YOU cannot handle "real life" without your parents wiping your ass, or coddling you....

I drive till I'M UNSAFE TO DRIVE and I KNOW WHEN those times approach, then I PULL OVER SOMEWHERE TO REST, yet rarely in any **** hole, trashed up, pee infested, truck stop.
I rarely drive between 03:00-06:00.
I HAVE THE HARDEST times giving sleep a go in daylight as it interrupts my CIRCADIAN RHYTHM!!

I do not look forward to or welcome in the mandated e-logs in '15, nor shall I be able to perform daily with such repetitive schedule.
I DRIVE WHEN I KNOW I CAN DRIVE regardless of "allowed time".
IF I am going to be akin to "punching a clock", I'll be doing just that AWAY FROM driving ANY c m v's.

--i'm working on some options to pry my self for ever from trucking--

Y'all Drove Long Time truckers, GOOD for you!!

I did not watch the video, did not click any links in this thread, do not need to do either as mentioned.

At some companies when a driver states "I do not feel SAFE", these companies have ZERO recourse regardless of load pick up or delivery time(s).

MOST Commercial Motor Vehicles in Class 6, 7, 8, ACCIDENTS, WRECKS, CRASHES occur in the final hours of the 11 hour drive time when Drivers are MOST fatigued.

CHEERS!!

Driver in wrong should not have taken the load. This happened 3 times?? Sounds like the company was trying to work with him.
The video might be a repost but there will be a 20/20 story about it this Friday.
You can watch the full story on ABC News' "20/20" on Friday, Sept. 19 at 10 p.m. ET.
There are so many ways to remedy this kind of working condition up to and including resigning etc.

Set your DVR's if you will not be able to watch.

Cerb, perhaps then you got the 'gist" of some of the comments here, when the driver had a total of 20 hours off. he DID get sleep in his first 10 hours off...then was told to take another 10 off...(probably no loads available after his first 10 off)

it was my saying that it is/was hogwash, that he couldn't get any additional sleep, later into his 2nd 10 hour break.

it was also my saying how stupid he is, in calling the company saying he didn't get any sleep in the extra hours, (which set off all the dispatchers in a foray of bashing him), when he could have easily said something else is slowing his progress like, traffic, construction, accident, and he could have easily taken a quick nap then, and carry on a bit later. so it wasn't a matter of him NOT getting ANY rest at all, in those 20 hours off...God KNOWS he had the time to get MORE sleep.....even a short 1-2 hour nap, before he had to leave....

i can go along with not accepting the load in the first place....but if he was told to take yet a 3rd 10 hours off........what would be his excuse then, if he can't handle the load they have for him....?????

to me, he belongs in a factory type setting, where his days are structured, as trucking is not his "cup of tea"......

i feel nor felt any sympathy for the bashing he got from ALL of the dispatchers that were belittling him...

steering wheel holders like him, sicken me to no end....

today's truckers.......what a frigging joke some of them are....

All I've ever done when I thought I was being "encouraged" to do something I considered unsafe was tell Dispatch to give it to me in writing. I would email them, stating that I didn't believe I could safely do whatever it was that they wanted me to do and ask them if they were telling me to do it anyway.

It's funny how fast they change their tune when their demands have to be put in a reproducible and provable form of communication.
