FedEx Freight | New Hire Questions

This thread smells funny IMHO.

Not sure what this is all about. But again thank you to all the (helpful)comments so far. I'm new to the freight industry and just had a few honest questions. I realize that no company is perfect but I'm at the point in my career where staying out 3 to 4 weeks and sleeping somebody's truck is getting old. When I can wake up in my own bed and have a true 48 hrs away from the truck and still make descent money. Again thanks for all the hospitality and although some may say this thread "smells funny" etc. I'm just trying to make a living and not trying to step on anybody's toes in the process.

For the most part this is a good company. Sure there are problems, as is the case in every company. However many like to complain about FXF, but most won't leave because they know the grass is just as brown on the other side of the fence!

No offense meant, but I have been thinking the same thing as djigman, but since I'm no longer with the company, but still monitor because I still have a lot of friends there, I held my opinion: it's well known that management also comments on here, so there is suspicion when someone sounds a little too excited about the company.

Yes, it can be tough finding jobs out there that pay the same or better, assuming you can't afford the pay cut (as was the case for me), but those jobs can be found, and I'm one of many who found one. And this used to be a much better company...

I should have explained my background a little better. I've been otr since 2006, missed a lot of birthdays, weddings, family get togethers etc. When I applied for this roadriver position it was a shot in the dark as I don't have much experience pulling pups. And to make it down to the final cut and have the job offered to me is one of the best things that's happened in a long time. Now as for what I was saying before about missing birthdays and whatnot, I understand that's the nature of the beast but I'm just ready to get off this road. To take a shower in my own home, and actually have a personal life outside of this rigg would be a blessing. It was fun in the beginnings but now with the driver's that's out here now it's getting to be not worth the hassles to be out here anymore. Hopefully this justifies my being "too excited". No trucking company is perfect, I'm sure FXF has there quirks like anyone else. In my situation the pros out weigh the cons.

You'll have more like 60+/- hours on average away from the truck when factoring Friday night and Monday morning hours off the clock. Best thing I can say is at least here you get paid for everything, if city, be it a delay, trl not ready, education, breakdown, and my favorite: cookouts/feeding time at terminal. Not saying anything about paid well or poor, just paid. Still better than OTR if family , friends, and life are more important than being a workaholic and a trucker hanging out at fuel desks and buffets.

Pay attention! He said he was road! Those things that you get paid for is all part of his mileage pay.

Right now I'm with a small time owner operator who pays 1099 and has no benefits. He likes to run "hot n heavy" loads of meat. So we will bring a Perdue load out to the Midwest then load out of the beef patches out that way. This whole union deal does have me concerned but again I think the pros out weigh the cons. There's other local jobs around the Maryland area but it's quite a bit of port, and fuel hauler work. Those are 2 jobs that I'm not too crazy about. Pulling pups can be just as dangerous I imagine but I was always told to respect the truck no matter what type of freight is being pulled. That's something my grandfather taught me a long time ago.
