It is sad. I will refrain from drawing any conclusion until more, if not all circumstances and facts are brought to bear.

~~How long ago was it?
If pre-merge there may not be anyone left that knows the answers................

Never mind he dates are on the stone....................................

You could think positive, he is getting more publicity from this than he would have gotten, from the replacement stone. I thank him for his service, as I am a vet also. thousands now know of his service and see his picture. We do not know how the stone got there, as I will not point the blame on YRCW, Who knows? Again thanks for his service, as this would not have happened I would never have know him. Peace!

This had to have been done with a tm's knowledge. All he had to do was contact an American Legion or VFW to find out the proper disposal method. If they needed help, all they had to do was ask for it.But I guess it was easier to just throw it in a ditch. This is discusting, but what I would expect from management nowadays.

Ive seen those gravestones on the Estes truck and how do we know that the cemetery wasn't in charge of taking care of the damaged gravestone. When shipped they must be in some cardboard and may have been received by the cemetery and found to be damaged later. Happens all the time. With all due respect and thanks to the person for his years of service it may be hard to point blame on YRC. Is there a policy in place that would demand all damaged stones be picked up and returned to the US Government ? Im certainly not saying YRC isn't capable of making gigantic mistakes on a daily basis, but I need more facts before I decide.

"That should've been the responsibility of the freight company. The Administration is still working to find out what went wrong."

Most of the gravestones I see crossing the dock are poorly package, and take forever to deliver. But hey, that $2000/week (worthless) Sales Rep worked super hard with the logistics company to get this account.

I know we have or had an account for headstones south of Tupelo ms.We would pick up a trailer load and deliver to Memphis DC.I had no idea that a trucking company would be reponsible for the removal and disposal. Now if said owner of old headstone wanted us to truck it somewhere to be cleaned and refurbished and then ship it back to said owner. Then the old headstone turned up trashed out on the side of the road in our care.then that would be the trucking company's fault.Ive just never seen anything like it

Delivered many a damaged headstone in my days.
Poorly packaged and heavy.
When they are cracked and broken they are refused for the carrier to return to OSD folks
Never much wondered until today what they did with them but the dumpster is my guess where their sent.
Side of the road ? If so some city driver's behind is going to be in hot water unless he tells who told him to dump it...............

I still don't know the jist of the whole story.First time I ever heard of a tossed headstone.I have heard of cemetery vandalism.

It was refused, damaged freight. Normally we would pay the claim and dispose of the freight either by tossing in the dumpster or sending to the salvage store(do we still have one?), the shipper normally controls disposition by agreement at the time of settlement. This would have had no salvage value so dumpster disposal would have been the route unless the shipper required otherwise.

At the factory if they damage a stone they sit in a huge scrap pile because there is really nothing you can do with them. Once a stone is polished it can't be used for much else. I use to haul grave markers and there were sometimes 30 stops on one trailer. I never did have one returned. They usually just disposed of any damaged stones themselves.

The driver should have done his job and brought it back to the barn.. But it was broken and they didn't want it, a pothole in Mississippi would have loved to have it.... RIP soldier...

We dont have drivers that would do that. At jmi we have two large dumpsters one for trash one for metal scrap from shop. Grave stone probably put in scrap bin. Where stone was found is where metal processor is located

So the theory might be that the stone fell off processing truck
