Sandy Pope acknowledges straightaway that she faces an uphill battle — she is the first woman to run for the presidency of the very macho Teamsters union, and she is running against a three-term incumbent, James P. Hoffa, who has the most famous last name in American labor.

But Ms. Pope, president of the Teamsters Local 805 in Queens since 2005, insists that she can pull off an upset. She argues that the rank and file are tired of Mr. Hoffa and fed up with contracts packed with concessions.

“The anger among the membership is at an all-time high,” said Ms. Pope, who ran unsuccessfully for the union’s No. 2 spot, secretary-treasurer, in 2006 as part of a dissident slate that lost by a margin of nearly 2-to-1. “The members are much more willing to look for change than five years ago.” ........................

She has my vote too!!! I know that Hoffa has lost pretty much all of the entire freight division. What I'm wondering, is how the other divisions see him? I don't know anybody that is represented by the Teamsters other than freight haulers.

I worked on a case study on southwest airlines and it said some of the workers there were represented by the turnpike.

If anyone wants to know who your locals(TEAMSTERS) represent it will be listed on their web site. Check it out then start asking questions. Here in Harrisburg Pa
(local776) has many different union employers, I hear many complaints from the freight side of things, along with UPS brown packages side. SOME of the Local union halls will hold their elections and the IBT will soon be holding their election DO YOU WANT CHANGE??? NOW IS THE TIME. TIME TO MAKE THAT CHANGE HAPPEN VOTE....VOTE........VOTE

A change in leadership would be a good thing but I don't see it happening. Too many workers just don't pay attention and have no idea what is going on. Then looks like we have two different candidates running against Hoffa, my money says that neither will have a full slate. Two opposing candidates with no full slate is a death sentence for them and a shoe in for Hoffa. IF Pope and Gegare could have gotten together they might have stood a chance, slim, but a chance.

Here in western NY there are garbage haulers, car haulers, gas haulers, ambulance drivers, bus drivers and a few other places. It seems to me that freight isnt the majority of the Teamsters any more!!!!

The pictures from the floor in Vegas are covered in red............

That is to be expected. Hoffa will retaliate against those who don't support him and they are afraid to not wear his garb.

We're not thriving under Hoffa, what do you have on Pope?

Don't be shy Stoney, let us hear the low down on Sandy Pope. I'm on the verge of thinking you have made a baseless accusation there and are tongue tied at the moment. I would like to hear the facts on any and all of the candidates I have to choose from and it sounds like you have some on Pope, please, please do share them.

Easy. Nothing new from her. She she still has that same populist(AT BEST) thinking on how an economy works. She's going to continue to support the same failed Democrat/liberal policies that chase jobs away. She believes its the governments job to create jobs.

Ive been all through her website and videos, and have heard nothing but the same generalized statements that we have heard the last 30 years from our union reps.

But if you would grow a spine, and go to the Teamsters forum here, you will see I haven't been shy on why I feel the way I do. But you go ahead stay in your safe little ABF world here.

Now, don't you be shy, what do you think she'll bring to the Teamsters?

Thus far I don't really know what she'll bring to the Teamsters and it is time I start looking. What I do see is that she has been president of her local for just a few short years, that does concern me a little. I also see that she is not James Hoffa and that is a big plus for me.

I am not swooned to either the Democratic or Republican platform, there are things I like and dislike about both but I do know the Republicans are for the big money man and woman and the Democrats are for the working man and woman.

I do not expect the government to create our jobs and I think it is foolish for anyone to believe that it can or should. But I do expect them to pass legislation that will help our economy create jobs. First and foremost I believe we need to bring our manufacturing back home from China. If you are as well versed as you say you are and have paid attention for the last 30 years you should see that both the Dems and the Repubs have sent our work to the rest of the world. A world that has little or no industrial regulations, little or no health care, little or no child labor laws, etc.

Now back to our pending union politics. Hoffa has proven to me that he is all about Hoffa, nothing more, nothing less. He should go and I need to brush up on Pope and Gegare and keep in mind as I cast my vote which one would stand a better chance of beating Hoffa, that is more important to me than what each might stand for. Sad, but true.

You say your not swooned by either party, but than admit into buying into the lie that the Repubs are for big money, and the Dems are for the working man. Then you say you don't believe the government should create jobs but pass legislation that help our economy create jobs. Well ABFer, that's the GOPs main platform. But when ever they try to pass legislation like that, the GOP is vilified for being for big business only.

Bring our manufacturing jobs back? You do realize the Unites States is still the #1 manufacturing nation in the world.

Stonehead, I not only work in the LTL industry I am an observant consumer. I not only see what we do, I see what we don't do and I see so much of our merchandise made in China and other third world countries that I find it hard to believe that we have any jobs left at all in America.

Since you have made a claim regarding our status as #1 in manufacturing, how about backing that up with legitimate statistics and China's ranking?

Observant consumer!!:LMAO: If your really notice, a lot of cheap junk is made over seas. Products with a low profit margin. America focuses on bigger thinks and a much more increased profit margin. Like advanced technology in medical science egineering, heavy equipment to name a couple areas.

You don't have Google? Not hard to find. You don't believe that America out produces China by 40%? Is the Teamsters telling us different?

U.S. still No. 1 in manufacturing | TuscaloosaNews.com

OK Stonehead, you win...US is still #1 in manufacturing (at least it was in 2008 according to that article). But did you read the article, or just pan out of it what you wanted to hear??? Obama is quoted as having said the the US out-manufactures China by 40%. I am a stupid Teamster, could you please tell me exactly what that means?

I read a little more of that article where a Mark Perry from the American Enterprise Institute is quoted with numbers that say the US manufactured 18% of the worlds goods in 2008 while he credits China with a 15% market share in a trend that favors both growth in China and shrinkage in the US. Where I need your help is figuring out how that 40% figure comes in here. As I do the math I see China making 80% as much stuff as the US in 2008-three years ago. Again the trend is not in our favor.

Incidentally, I'm not particular as to whether a job is lost in a high margin industry or a low margin industry, to me a job lost to a third world country is a just lost in America.
