FedEx Freight | What Exactly is the Weather driving policy now?

We were also told that if you tried to make the attempt but couldn't make, it would be excused but you would also be expected to work that Saturday IF needed.

Well what could have brought about this sudden concern for employee safety? This sudden, we love you and don't want you to injure yourself and be there for your family? Last couple of years it was CRITICAL write up if you called out during a snowstorm. Last year in CIN they wrote up 23 guys for calling out one day during snow. It was a coaching session or write up if you got stuck on the snow and needed a tow. Well this new policy seems fair. Thanks temsters, I mean fedex for looking out for us.

Although this policy wasn't changed until this year, last year in CLT on several occasions our runs were cancelled due to inclement weather and we ran on Sat to catch back up, no occurrences, coaching sessions, or write ups were ever accessed....although I will admit the changes last year were done only AFTER employees questioned our adverse weather policy. It seems those policies were reassessed and the changes were made, I personally don't think the threat of the union had anything to do with it.

In 21 years of driving, I've shut down on my own twice for weather, ice, to be precise. I see many fair weather drivers in the LTL side of the industry. What causes it? Is it fear of losing their job? Where does that come from? Strict company rules and firing practices? Is it a lack of confidence in one's ability? You tell me.

Dont be judgmental of another persons driving ability. Lot of states have cut back on taking care of roads. Rather the driver get off the road than be in a ditch or on front of a pack doing a crawl. I for one not going to brag how many times I didnt shut down because you can shut down 100 times but only one screw up and what did bragging rights get you. Be proffesional. Cowboy days are over. A lawyer will make sure of that

In 22 years of driving I've shut down twice, the first was December 18, 2009....but not because I wanted to! WV DOT shut down the Turnpike at exit 9 (Princeton) due to 2 FT of snow/ice, spent the night in my tractor that wouldn't idle, even with temps below 32*, in the middle of I-77 for 11 hrs!!
Oh what a night...late December back in 2009....

The second was the following year....13 drivers out of CLT were sent to met POS, and only one POS driver showed up due to inclement weather. The other 12 were supposed to drive on through but PA had I-81 N in Harrisburg due to snow. Spent the night in HGR, one driver got to return to CLT, the other 11 went on to POS...eventually! Took two days but we all finally made it back!

And Was it worth it? Did they even thank you for your effort, even though you are paid to do it? I bet you guys lost money. If you loose money, it's ok. But if Fed loses, all hell breaks loose!!

Or could it be Safety 1st? It seems to me, when law enforcement encourages, non essential travel to be avoided, it should be avoided. Personally, I kind of enjoy a little inclement weather, to a point.

I'm sure most of us have been out there when we shouldn't have been. The highest risk is usually from others crashing into you...
