Pardon my ignorance.I don't work for FedEx.Why doesn't the dock workers vote as well as the drivers? If the terminal is going to be union.Shouldnt all labor be involved? Just asking.

I've bumped that union dock before at the Freightliner assembly plant. Bout 15 guys sitting around doing nothing and none of them came over to unload their freight, wasn't their job. Had to wait on John to get off his break.
Yellow backed in beside me and they were almost fighting to unload his trl.
Saw first hand how union brotherhood works, also saw why I wanted no part of it.
Aaaaaw driver.sour grapes driva? Hey look at it this way.Youre on the clock getting paid.So what does it matter how long you wait
.

A few factors involved, in my opinion. The union isn't as likely to get enough YES votes when you include all the "don't plan to do this for a career" types. Historically the contracts do very little for dock and part-time workers so those folks don't see as much value. If the center was able to get the union in with drivers only, theoretically it would be then easier to get the dock workers "on board".

The "Brotherhood" is all about "we are in this together" but then they escape on the proverbial life boat while yelling to those stuck on the sinking ship "we'll come back for ya!"

It's a cowardice, but likely prudent tactic.

Also quite difficult to make the contact required to even discuss the possibilities. Add in the fact that the vast majority are part time, and as you mentioned, not in it for the long term... making their inclusion not practical.

Also drivers are a seperate licensed/regulated entity, always under different rules.

Thank you Ex396.Not to tout but I'm a Teamster. So I didn't know why the exclusion of dock workers.Im an amateur also. When it comes to rules and inclusion clauses.Hence I've never been with a company with labor wanting representation for the first time.

To clarify, I don't know why the exclusion. That's why I stated "in my opinion". I haven't been a teamster in over 25 years. When I was (local 396), the starting dock pay was higher than the starting CDL P&D pay. I believe that was done to encourage short-timer mentality to vote YES. If I recall correctly, less than 1 year on and the P&D pay surpassed dock and top scale was a significant difference. It got a bunch of dock to say yes which meant more initiation fees (higher turnover on dock) and more dues (more members) into the teamsters' pocket than excluding them would have. Fast forward 25+ years and I believe the IBT knows that the odds of the vote passing with dock included are even lower.

I cannot ever remember that dock pay was more than driver pay.. If it is true it would have to be before my time in the union ..

Local 396, 1987 Starting dock pay was $9.39/hr. (I remember the exact amount because that's where I started). Starting CDL P&D driver pay was $9.00/hr. Drivers were over $10 if I remember correctly at 6 mos., and over $11 at a year, topping out at close to $14. Dock top rate was $11 something.

Those numbers may sound pretty small, but one needs to remember minimum wage at that time was $3.35/hr.

What's sad the pay hasn't changed much. Still lot of warehouse workers and drivers still making that same money.

I was only 19 years old, one year of college looking for part-time work. I couldn't believe that I fell into a job making 2.8x minimum wage without a degree or any special skills...nepotism.

Back on topic. Any word on the vote count?

Starting pay in 1973 In the Western States Joint council 3 was $4.47 an hour the only difference in pay was 5 cents more for 3 axle and 10 cents for short line ( Shuttle)
The dock workers were no different than anybody else.
Their was little to NO turnover at a union carrier.
If one has not been a Teamster in 25 years how could you possibly give accurate information. One has to live it ,work it and be involved to understand NMFA it has changed so much.

I'm hearing that no votes will be counted until after CKB votes...which will be next Thur, the 22nd

Here's what I hear. The board is not going to count the PKB votes until CKB votes so as to not influence those voters. Fedex is balking and asking the board for precedent for such an outrageous maneuver. Fedex would like them counted asap. The other election, CRW, which is in a different region, has offered up a date to count the votes before the vote next Thursday. Fedex said yes. Waiting on the union to say yes. Hopefully they'll agree. Let's see. so I hear.

Typical union/NLRB tactics...let's make up the rules as we go!!!....and these guys complain about the company, we see the union is no different!!
