Its part time, city p&d/dock worker

Any ideas on what kind of hours this might be? Min Max?

I think I want a paycut for awhile for a chance to get on with a good carrier fulltime...right?

jus dont know...Im at 1200 a week takin home 9oo of it....I could survive at 500 a week for 6 months or so, but thats the maximum of my stretchabilities, what you think?

You would probably be working replacement or supplemental work depending on how busy abf in your area is. Might be working inbound/outbound loads on dock or :shit:ty p&d runs. For you, no vacations, sick days or set hours so no guarantee of money. You must be or become a union member and depending on the age of the seniority board might give you an idea if you could get hired soon. Remember, abf checks your driving records and drug screens...just sayin. Good luck on your decision.

Also, no health insurance until you are hired. 1200/wk seems like a sacrifice to become a casual with no guarantees but I dont know you situation or job satisfaction. Im sure some active union members on this sight will be able to tell you if abf in your region or abf as a whole is busy. This is how union people are; willing to help and add new members when we can...even an old ******* like me!

ABF has made it hard for new hires to survive. you see an ABF driver on the road, stop and ask some questions. a lot of things have to be considered if it would be a good move or not.

You seem to already understand the situation pretty well. No one can tell you how long you will end up as a "casual", or how many hours/days you will be working. There is always a chance that it wont turn into a full time position. But this is a chance you must take to get on with ABF.

I don't consider it a "good carrier" - I think it's a "great carrier". This is the type of job that virtually no one ever quits, for any reason, once they get hired on permanently.

Ultimately it's up to you whether you take the chance or not. ABF doesn't tend to hire when there isn't a need, but there are still no guarantees. There was 1 fella at our barn that couldn't ride it out and wait for a full time position to open up. He got a full time job at another carrier, because he couldn't afford being a casual any more. But 9 out of the last 10 casuals did make it to permanent status and have never looked back.

Good Luck

Depending on your local supplement's as a casual you actually will have health insurance. I know in the west if you work enough shifts you do because I had insurance as a casual before I got hired on full time.

in ny, you need 36 punches in the quarter to qualify for benefits for the next quarter. others are different. central states will put you on benefits faster, but drops you as soon as you arent working, iirc.

You may take a hit short term, but in the long run you won't regret it. Pros outweigh the cons with ABF, in my opinion.

Thankx boys

Waiting for 2nd interviews from ABF and Saia next week...Im guessing I'll ace those and my only stressin will be background checks, as always..all my stuff is 20+ back, so i usually pass checks 7 year, 10 year etc etc...If either does lifetime, im toast

Aside from that, Im upgrading, and happy about it...I can thank'yall

Just make sure are honest about the background check. If they find stuff you didn't list I don't think they would hire you. When I got hired on my tm told me they find stuff most people don't know about...whatever that means.
Good luck and let us know how it goes driver

Understood/agreed...where im at made me write out affidavits of events for sht i did in 98 and prior...this to safety dept...seems like every carrier is outsourcing 3rd party folk for this stuff, only supposed to be 10 years max, but they're all sending the carrier lifetime results...bastids
Been a challenge..im not good looking on paper, only in person...Im succesfull when pushed by a manager out in the field that wants me...

So , ya...background hiding isnt gonna work anymore. anywhere...if you molested a young yak in the 80's, while driving yaks OTR, well, they will find out....and then you gotta go explain that stuff, lol

will do chief...ya, tha money isnt bad for my area, its OK...and i havent missed a day yet, checks always show up via linehaul meet, hand to hand pass off (no direct deposit)...just looking at my LAST job, so im looking at bennies real heavily now...

I am thinking twice, or more slowly about all the things im NOT garanteed with the part time miscellaneous position...id be a pissy btch if nothing better happened in 6 months...

Good luck, hope you get the job. Give them a good day's work and be honest and you'll find it to be a good job. A FT position could open sooner than you think. I think it is by far one of the best Teamsters driving jobs to have and definitely one of the best in trucking. I am thankful for the opportunity to get on here.
