No, but they could fire you for stealing (time), dishonesty (lying about what you did) and altering company equipment (that one was put in for the road drivers putting vise grips on fuel return lines but it applies everywhere). Then they stick a small piece of fiber, paper or other material under your battery and if it's not there when you come back in you're guilty, guilty, guilty (that one's already been done).

What's the purpose of the vice grips on the fuel return line? Could the driver before me forget to remove them, leaving me holding the bag?
 
Gripping off the return line to the tank is looked upon as destruction of company property. They will can you if caught.
Many people think that by doing that it increases the pressure forcing more fuel in the pump. Gripping the return line won't make it go any faster !!!
It will get someone clock time down the road however. Doing this screws up the pump and it will fail after awhile.
Safety people have been known to stop you along the road and check if they are suspect.
 
The Ol' Vise Grips on the Fuel line trick worked,...oh....about 25 years ago, on mechanical motors. Of course, you were supposing that the motor could handle a choked-off return line, and your foot flat on the floor with the radiator fan tickling your tootsies. Mostly,......it bought you time on the side of the road, with pump problems,...overheating,........(speeding tickets).......Another trick was dumping two or three cans of ATF in each fuel tank.......Make it run hotter than a red-headed two-dollar *****.............supposedly.............DON'T try either of these methods with computer motors and clear low-sulphur fuel,.......Besides,....the day and age of the Yee-Haa Cowboy Gear-Jammer is long gone.......You're supposed to drive like a technician, nowadays......

That 'paper under the battery' trick wouldn't hold a lick of water. My handheld crashes regularly and to get it to shape up, I have to sometimes pull the battery and push the little button behind it.
 
I do it all the time. Damn things never work, even with a good battery. Not trying to steal time. we got one that The screen flashes all the time. If you start late, odds are that's the one you will get. Annoying as all get out. I tell dispatch, once again, I'm running that day without a browser, call me for anything special, or for pick ups. And yes, I deduct my cell phone cost on my taxes.

True, but I get tired of the "where were you and what were you doing between 8:41am and 8:47am...your handheld shows you were offline" questions.

Wow that person would be very busy at our terminal. They just got a new batch of batteries in but before that they wouldnt last half a day at best. You would either run it out and move to paper or you would pull the battery and only put it in every hour or so to update it and get your pickups.

We have a couple of outlying areas in the mountains of W.Pa. where there's no service,.....sometimes for both your cell phone and PDA. Don't break down in one of these areas and walk to a farm house,... because it's a mortal sin for one of the Amish to allow you to use his hidden landline,..........I've always told our guys to USE that paper log they give you at dispatch,.......Your documentation should disprove any accusations ,...........And,....The argument should be: "Are you calling me a liar? Just because your "technology" doesn't work reliably,....and I'VE taken the time to document where I've been,......You're going to QUESTION me?" Don't forget you are being paid,.....by the minute, by the way,......to put all of your entries neatly and legibly on paper,......The PDA convenience is merely for the company,....your paper log trumps unreliable "technology".
 
The old mechanical Cummins engines return fuel line could be clamped to restrict the hot fuel returning to the fuel tanks. The return fuel would help cool the fuel system. The fuel pump could be modified to lower power if the return fuel line was restricted by working against the AFC but not many were set up like this. The AFC reduced smoke by allowing the PT pump to gradually fuel the engine instead of pressuring the fuel rail all at once. When a return line was clamped the engine would not idle down until the fuel in the fuel rail was burned. There were several accidents caused when the driver tried to stop & the engine was pulling against the brakes even when he let off the accelerator.

We were told that even when the pda shows no service, it is still recording ,and once service is re-established, all the info will download and they can still see what you've done the whole time that you were "not connected". Do not be fooled by the pad having "no service".
