New Penn | looking at jobs

Hello, just got my cdl and been looking at jobs in my area New Penn, Ward, Conway, Yellow are all hiring in my area. I have warehouse experience but not much driving experience.. how does the process work at new penn? Thanks in advance
 
What area are you in. I'm in Baltimore. We are looking for a few drivers. They have hired a few with no experience. But new hires are not on the street long, once bids change, every 3 months in Baltimore most of them get stuck on the dock in the evening. Do you have CDL A with haz mat. Sure would like to see new drivers hired on. Rather then them giving freight to cartage companies every day.
 
Yes have my haz mat, tanker, n doubles. I'm in central pa..seems like it's a small terminal just Don't want to spend my whole career working the docks

Stay away from any YRC affiliated company!
 
Here is the absolute truth about working for New Penn. You will work for 3 full years until you get the top rate which is subject to your local supplement in the NMFA. You will also have to pay an initiation fee to join the local union and you will be subject to a weekly 15 percent deduction in your pay for what is called "equity wages". You will also pay 2.5 times your hourly rate of pay once a month for union dues. This 15 percent deduction is in effect until March of 2019 at the least. In return you will get completely free health care, dental, prescription drug, vision and a retirement plan that's contributed for you at no cost to you. In return you will be working on any shift they need you on. Once you make the seniority board at your local terminal you can expect to get an annual raise and earn a vacation thats paid after a year. While your individual terminal may be different, it is most likely that you will work the dock a majority of your time there until a bid opens up which could be years and years away. You may get to cover vacations and sick days and days when there is a lot of volume in your local terminal but its sporadic.

Con Way offers more money an hour but you have to pay for your benefits and you wont have the protection from being fired for ticky tack things like you get when you work for a unionized company.

YRC has its faults for sure but a lot of companies have their faults too. Good luck on your job search.
 
Thanks for the info reality. ..I have heard a lot of good things n bad things about all companies. I'm narrowed it down to ward or np..going down to the terminals this week sometime n talk to some of the drivers n see where I fit in best....one thing why would they being hiring if it takes years to get on the board?
 
Trucking in general is a high turnover industry. Many people think that they will just get in the truck and drive and then go home. In the LTL industry its different. Back up to docks, street side delivery, inside delivery, etc. Hard work everyday. Your best friend is going to be a hand cart and a pallet jack not to mention your friends left and right hand. YRC and New Penn are hiring because they believe that customers are going to start shipping more goods and in return they will need more people to deliver these goods.

Also, a lot of drivers are retiring and some people just leave for greener pastures. New Penn is a regional division of YRC with next day delivery to the northeast and mid Atlantic and Montreal and Toronto. YRC is a long haul division so they may have more freight on their docks to move everyday. Regardless of where you end up, you will load your own truck and you will deliver your own freight everyday and you will work the dock everyday at any of the YRC companies everyday. Everyone works the dock, everyday.

Not years 'til you get on the board, years until you get a steady start time and run.
 
All in all New Penn isn't a bad company to work for. Ward you will probably have to contribute to your health care, and I don't know if they pay overtime. New Penn is OT over 8. Been there 24 years. Just recently had a couple of guys come back who had left for Duie Pyle.
