What's the new hire starting pay and how long does it take to get to full scale and what's vacation issue I've been reading about.

As a new hire what is the starting pay and how long to get to full scale and also what about vacation.
Starting pay is 90% of top rate, which varies a little across the country and I believe it's a lot more in Chicago area. Here it's about $23.50 so $21.50 or so would be starting rate. Top rate in a year. Vacation is a joke...one week after two years seniority and you get last choice of vacation so don't expect anything in summer for a while. Then after 8 years seniority you'll get two weeks and by then you might get one in the summer.

Don't forget that you won't qualify for 5 sick days until Jan. 1 of next year. Terminal managers keep mumbling about "Courtesy Days" off, non-compensated, non-disciplinary days off for new-hires.......Sorry,.....that's non-contractual,....something they made up out of thin air. If you're going to give new-hires time off with no discipline,......well, then, you're certainly going to give it to me,.....and everyone else on the seniority board,.....too. Just because they loused-up the contract doesn't mean that we're going to get all warm'n'fuzzy about giving benefits to new-hires, that the rest of the seniority board can't have. Don't let the Terminal Manager blow smoke up your anterior discharging valve, by telling you that you can ..."take a few days off if you need them......Uncompensated, of course....."...........Other than that,....what Bro. ABFer said goes pretty much the rest of the country,.....I don't think Chicago is substantially higher,......but then they are White Paper,......at least 706, and 710 are......

I had forgotten about that sick day perk for our new hires. Nothing makes corporate America feel better than kicking a working man when he's already down.

And how much is the pay per mile to start and top out? Thanks.
I can't give you a hard figure on road driver mileage pay but it should be .59/mile or so for the top rate so 90% would be about .53.

I gotta agree with you, canary....on the 'extra benefits' for the low guys...I've seen a rash of them come their way in the last year or so. Let me tell you a few things that've been happening at our barn, and if you would, please give me your 'take' on whether it's right or not. One: closing our terminal is (was?) pretty much a one-man show..it was for me when I was doing it, and it was for everybody before me. I've been off the bottom for over a year now, but they keep wanting me to stay later and 'assist' the bottom guy. I think it's BS, but I stay and help most nights, trying to ignore the fact that everyone bailed on me most of the time when I was doing it. Two: our casual NEVER has to stay and close the terminal...ever! Your opinion? Brother ABFer, you can chime in too!

I don't know what to tell you about a casual closing up they really aren't employees. Do they have company keys? They shouldn't be allowed to leave if a man on the list has to stay IMO.

That was kinda my thinking too. I was a casual at another Union carrier several years ago, and along with the other casuals, we were never allowed to leave before the guys on the board. Me thinks there's some behind-the-scenes shenanigans going on. And yes, he does have a set of keys.

As the labor market for all types of jobs gets tighter,....and particularly in LTL trucking,....the qualifications get lower and lower. You're probably getting the same thing we're getting:....The TM approaches you and says: " Would you mind taking this Relo Cube/ U-Pack/ grocery warehouse/ hand-unload? You do it much, much better than the new-hires."...............Yeah,..Right. What he means is that I don't whine and cry or make a complete fiasco out of the job, to get out of doing it. I just go and get my work done, no matter what it is. I've got 22 years with ABF,.....spent the first 5 years working inbound dock,.....spent a few more years by choice , on the dock, when we switched to a NDXP facility,........I recently told that to a new-hire who constantly grumbles and complains about night-time dock work......He wants to file grievances over what he perceives to be "safety hazards",.....when in reality, they are minor petty inconveniences. Some are of his own making. When I explained to him that all of us at one time or another, were on the inbound dock,.......he told me that since I spent so much time there I am MUCH better at it than him,.....and that I should work the inbound dock,....and let him,....as a more "inexperienced" man, have my 7;00 A.M. peddle start...........Takes your breath away, doesn't it? The sheer brazenness........So,.....now that he's not getting daylight street,....( he's been here 9 months....)......he's threatening to quit. That'll make the second one in a year......and we're a small terminal.

I have seen several new hires that didn't think they should have to work nights & weekends. Some actually thought that threatening to quit would put them on the dayshift. A rumor was started among a group one time that a doctor's note that late shift work was causing them to lose sleep & was unhealthy would force the company to make exceptions for them.

Hilarious! I'm tellin' ya...this new generation coming up just doesn't wanna work! They have NO concept of what hard work really is. Our industry is in trouble...when was the last time you saw somebody young (mid 20's) behind the wheel of a freight truck?
