SAIA | June raise

Here's how I looked at running teams as a new hire.

Pros:

Steady work
Good truck ( we got mostly 14's or newer in DLS )
Very good chance at holding a bid run.
If your partner takes a day or two off they still keep you busy.
The run I was on had plenty of time for breaks, showers, etc.
Pretty good $$$$, 90k on bottom bids easily
2 days off each week. Most runs I think get Sun & Mon off ( this does vary )

Cons:

Gone 5 full days
You really need a great partner.
Learning how to live in a truck ( that rarely stops )

Thanks fellas. Ive already talked with them. A friend of mine is in management for saia and he is waiting on my app. Im having a tough time convincing my wife its what i need to do cause she is worried about the three months with no insurance. We just went through that last summer but this job just isnt cutting it.

The sign on bonus should more than cover a cobra health insurance plan for 90 days.

I had over 16 years with a company....and the only thing I regret about coming to saia is that I didn't do it 15 yrs earlier.

Not that it's any of my business, but they don't give you any of that sign on bonus up front. Usually comes in increments the as you accumulate service time with the company.

$2500 at 90 days and another $2500 at the 6 month mark. The bonus made it a little easier to swallow the $1800 dollars it cost me for 3 months of insurance.

$3000 in Dallas/Garland .... $1500 in 90 .... $1500 at the 6 month mark. In Texas it's $3000 .... Except for Midland/Odessa which is $5000 I believe ..... Perhaps because who in the hell would want to live there. BTW a SAIA driver gets $1000 if he gets the referral. And that's separate and doesn't affect the new hires $3000.

I'm sorry for the wrong info. I didn't realize the bonus was different around the country. I guess it just depends on how bad they need drivers in a particular area.

Saia was losing drivers to the oilfields so they increased the hourly pay in the Midland/Odessa area a few years back. Areas where it is harder to get drivers usually have a better sign on bonus. But now we have had quite a few drivers that left for the oilfields try to get back on.

Back when I was with Saia, I suggested that they give a "retention" bonus, to keep well trained drivers with the company. The response was a very loud "ha ha ha, that's a stupid idea"! I thought it had some merit. Guess not
