Investigators: Truck driver in fatal Boone Co., KY crash was texting

Expect the number of "trucker text to CRASH" to climb with, as well, the constant influx of newbie as well foreign truckers, but that's just MY opinion.

If they would make it a federal law that the same technology that is in the hand held computers we carry, into cell phones(screen goes dark at 10 mph, and cannot be used), but like anything else. It is all about the money, cell phone companies that is. Profit is more important than lives.

Hmm I remember when I was with Overnite,UPS was attempting to blend us with their Diad computer system.
I had just become a UPS Safety Trainer, believe me it was not my idea, however I wasn't given any choice to keep my job.

All of us city drivers had to go through the training to use them.
I told my Terminal Manager there is no way I'm going to look at that thing while I'm driving.
It is just plan unsafe & besides I think it is not legal.
I couldn't believe what he told us all. after my bold statement.
Oh well he said UPS is exempt from that law,so if you hear the ping alert we had better answer it no matter what we were doing.

I never checked to find out if UPS had that exemption.
I just doubted they where.

Now that I'm retired I don't miss anything about UPS,if we stayed Overnite I may have worked a while longer.

But getting back on topic,if you take your eyes off your driving for any reason,at any speed, the reaction time is greatly reduced.
The faster you go the less time you have to react, once you look back at the direction of travel.
So if you really need to look away,it is always best to find a safe place to pull over & do what you have to do.

Best advice I can offer here is to have a safe trip, keep your eyes on the road.

Most phones do a safe driver mode that cuts the phone off when you are rolling at 35mph or faster. But thats up to the driver to use it or not. Most YRC drivers are out of control with thier phones and would never use that feature. Alot of YRC drivers still drive and talk without a blue tooth. Sad
