Yellow | abuse of company time

I mean Holland doesnt really use breakbulks. We load direct.
Holland has a proud tradition of customer service. They take care of their customers and grow the business, big difference than Yrc. Yrc's mindset is customers are a hastle and good service will only encourage them. We look at customers like a stray cat, if you dont feed it hopefully it will go away. I've never heard a TM talk about getting more business, but they're always talking about targetting accounts to run off, and they're pretty effective at it too. Our bill count has gone from 600 outbound to about 230 now over the last 6 years, and their still talking about certain accounts they would like to get rid of, which they will go for days without picking up. With all the other carriers out there its amazing to me anybody uses us.

Hollands method of moving freight and YRC's are not even close to the same. I would say the majority of Hollands freight delivers next day, and not more than 2. Their claims are so much better than most companies because they have cut times and do not try to load 2 loads into 1 trailer keeping damage to a minimum.

Here in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, YRC about the same size as either company was pre-merger. When I say size, I am referring to both the number of employees AND the number of customers.

As was stated earlier, if we get a good customer, they are viewed as a liability. The quicker we can get rid of them, the better.

New work rules really help too.:rolleyesz: NOT!!!!!!! They call and offer 6th and 7th punch every weekend. The same old story about how far behind we are and we could really use your help. Last weekend, I offered to come in and work 6 hours (family function to attend later that day). I was told 8 hours or nothing at all. Evidently the company isn't too far behind, or they would WELCOME me to work 6.

Yeah like I said, Holland is a quality carrier. Seems like mgmt at Yrc could learn a little something from them on how to run a successful, thriving, growing freight company. If only there was some way Holland's mgmt could show ours the rope. Of course we all know that will never happen.

I'm sure you realize that there is a difference operationally in how a regional carrier functions verses a long haul carrier.

Worked in both regional and long haul. Now let me ask if there should be a difference in their attitudes towards customers? Sure seems like a wide gulf between them. I hear customers speak highly of Holland all the time, and I see a lot of freight get routed their way by customer request. Walmart drives much of our business which I'm sure we probably lose money on. Holland's business is driven by customer requests that want their freight on time and intact, and are willing to pay a premium for that service. I've talked to their drivers and Holland will put 1 skid on a trailer and have a driver drive 2 hrs to deliver it just to make service. Sure they lost money on that shipment but they retained a customer

On time and intact. Is there any other option?

YRC here used to give away all residential and most liftgate deliveries to a cartage company.. Filed grievance after grievance about it being city work and how it is effecting our service.... TM refused to listen and finally we got the company to have us perform that work after a blog site was revealed to the company.... The site stated how bad service was with YRC on residential deliveries how they would never use YRC again. Long story short they complained that their shipment was delivered by some hobo cartage company, shady looking workers, damaged freight, claim issues and service.
Our supplement states any freight tendered to cartage is to be delivered that day or returned back to YRC. YRC didn't enforce this as cartage would hold the shipments until they had enough shipments to service that area...All the while that service reflected back to YRC on these blogs and discredits the company..

All that has changed now after a long battle now its the equipment we need to fix to service that freight as it is enough freight for a bid..

any one here from greenville sc remember they had load after load of base board heaters .they would send a full load to charlotte every night with the utility driver .
one night he came in and didnt have any of that freight . driver said his tm thought it was too much trouble and told them to get another carrier . sounds crazy to me but that how we do it . just keep tossing money away . no problem the teamsters will vote to give more back. all we have to do is ask and hoffa will getter done

No one is on layoff and our office clerks are Teamsters so we got an eye on it if there is an abuse of it being farmed out... management is working with us now as it benefits labor and management to getting it done w/o subbing it out. I remember the cookie dough account used to be a big account with Roadway but it has slowly gone away for some reason after years of servicing those Time Critical shipments (money makers).
"Wonder Why?"

Cookie dough and base board heaters? Maybe too labor intense costs associated with them??

We had a similar situation. Had an account that yellow had serviced for many years, 2-3 trailers a day, very profitable business. Roadway TM couldnt stand it because it was about an hr away and the freight was time consuming to break, but not real bad, you could break it in hour and a half. Started having utility guys pick it up and drag them to a break bulk. TM got credit for the bill count and didnt have to break the freight. When they shut down utility, he would not pick up the freight and bring it back to our terminal under any circumstance. Yrc didnt want to lose the account because it was a multi million $ account, so they decided to have linehaul pick it up, and of course those guys couldnt find it, and didnt want to work with the customer spotting mts in their dock, so of course welost the business. Yellow handled this business as their primary carrier for at least 15 yrs no big deal. Unbelievable!!!
