Looking to hire in at the Columbus, OH terminal.

The choose would be Fulltime Linehaul or City P@D Driver. What type of schedule on each one of these at this terminal should I expect starting off.

And the first year money or home time difference? Is Columbus considered a end of the linet or beak bulk terminal?

I am not in Columbus but line haul will most likely be system out 5 days, p&d city will come in late and work late.

City is mostly day work from early morning to early evening. They work by the hour. Read the new hire thread on the Saia section. I don't know how the city decides start times, you can ask RunawayTrain, he works the city. I work Linehaul. Linehaul is paid by the mile with hourly pay used to pay for drop n hooks, breakdown pay, delay pay, etc. Linehaul is broken into 2 possibilities, bid run and system. Bid run can be out and back or a laydown situation where you lay down for the day and return the next day. System is whatever Central Dispatch needs help with. Depending on what Central Dispatch needs , a system driver may be on the road for 5 or 6 days, cover bid runs, or just any situation that they need help with. Linehaul bid is mostly night work but system guys can be scheduled to run when their ten is up, so a combo of day and night work is possible. The terminal is supposed to rebid at least once a year and the Linehaul drivers choose bid runs by senority. Generally, new hires will not have enough senority to get a bid run so they end up in the system. Sometimes a new driver will walk into a bid opening, if the terminal doesn't have system drivers based from there or the terminal has added more bid runs, but count on being in the system.

Depends on whether you want to work nights or days and whether you want to make more or less money. End of the line or breakbulk terminology really doesn't come into play. I work at a smaller barn. The city guys seem satisfied with the hours that they get and our group of bid and system guys stay busy. That's not to say that cuts don't happen. There are seasonal slow downs and Saia will cut but it doesn't happen much. You'll have to ask the Columbus guys for more specifics.

I met the driver trainer from Columbus oh at smith system training in dfw tx last year he was pretty cool

I don't know how it is in CMB, but the city operation at Saia is a huge mess. Plus they haul a lot of garbage freight and do a lot of inside deliveries. I've been in LTL for 15 years at 3 different companies and have never seen anything as disorganized as this. However, the linehaul side is pretty laid back and easy.

I was city for the first year I worked at Saia and wish I would have gone linehaul way sooner than I did. Way less stress and BS to deal with.

I've been doing p&d for 9 yr here at Saia and worked for 2 other carriers and it's the same just a lot more busier here at Saia the freight looks better than ever rare when I have to call in an exception and the inside deliveries ain't bad they provide a pallet jack and hand truck it's usually lazy drivers that don't like p&d here

I'm hoping the problem is more confined to this area or even the specific terminal. It's much better at the bigger terminals I'm sure. I definitely like P&D better than just sitting in a truck all night, but for the money you can't beat it.

We do not do very many inside delivery s in columbus...all carriers have hand freight
.all the big company's do...if working bothers you ltl freight is not for y

If you want to think I'm lazy or don't want to work that's you're prerogative, but I was one of the quickest peddlers at my terminal. I love the "go-go-go" of city work but after almost 15 years of it needed a change. Plus I'm trying to eliminate a little debt in my life.

I came from another big LTL but I've never seen so many inside deliveries, hand unloads and grocery warehouses in my life until I came here. We can't keep city drivers because of it. It's different at every terminal, sure, but the OP asked for opinions and there's my 2 cents.

All that being said, I love linehaul :17142:

Yes, but I preferred staying out. I wanted to stay rolling and the best miles are when you're out in the system. Waiting on the phone to ring was the worse part of it so I tried to sign up for weekend work and get away from DLS as much I could.

I'll chime in...Saia, IMHO, does way too many inside, sort and segregate, and hand freight for most guys. Biggest issue in my experience was that they saddle you with all kinds of these types of deliveries (Starbucks!) and then don't ease up on other p&d stops. So you run your butt off, then the boss is pissed because you missed a pickup. Never made sense to me.
