City is mostly day work from early morning to early evening. They work by the hour. Read the new hire thread on the Saia section. I don't know how the city decides start times, you can ask RunawayTrain, he works the city. I work Linehaul. Linehaul is paid by the mile with hourly pay used to pay for drop n hooks, breakdown pay, delay pay, etc. Linehaul is broken into 2 possibilities, bid run and system. Bid run can be out and back or a laydown situation where you lay down for the day and return the next day. System is whatever Central Dispatch needs help with. Depending on what Central Dispatch needs , a system driver may be on the road for 5 or 6 days, cover bid runs, or just any situation that they need help with. Linehaul bid is mostly night work but system guys can be scheduled to run when their ten is up, so a combo of day and night work is possible. The terminal is supposed to rebid at least once a year and the Linehaul drivers choose bid runs by senority. Generally, new hires will not have enough senority to get a bid run so they end up in the system. Sometimes a new driver will walk into a bid opening, if the terminal doesn't have system drivers based from there or the terminal has added more bid runs, but count on being in the system.
Depends on whether you want to work nights or days and whether you want to make more or less money. End of the line or breakbulk terminology really doesn't come into play. I work at a smaller barn. The city guys seem satisfied with the hours that they get and our group of bid and system guys stay busy. That's not to say that cuts don't happen. There are seasonal slow downs and Saia will cut but it doesn't happen much. You'll have to ask the Columbus guys for more specifics.
