ODFL | Finally put an app in

Dont feel bad bigreem i'm in the same boat. I tried to get on as well a dui got you and when they found out I use to be in the teamsters union interview was over. Lights out.

You're in then, they wouldn't go through the hassle if they weren't gonna hire you. Congratulations!

Awesome! Man I'm excited!

I asked the hiring manager, and he did say that it was a combo position (dock, P&D, and line) and he said that basically you go on a seniority board and once you move up you can bid on a run with no dock work involved.

Im still kind of unclear, because which board am I on? P&D? Line? I'll have to ask a few more questions to clarify, but other than that I need to get a copy of my 5 year MVR and I'm scheduled for Friday morning 7 am with the driver trainer!

When I went to my actual interview, he made my 10 year old DUI seem trivial. I also told him that I currently work at a union barn and he didn't care at all. I'm sorry you weren't given the opportunity because of that, IMO that's not right at all. I would encourage you to maybe reapply again and see what happens.

Formal app, road test, drug test, mass amounts of paperwork filled out, and even a ID photo taken... Now just waiting on corporate!

Yall pray for me and my sanity while I play the waiting game lol.

Question...
It says they send a letter to your former employers, does that go corporate, or the terminal you worked out of? Anyone know?

So if anyone is still watching the thread, I got a call today from the hiring manager.

I listed my 10 year old DUI, and when I pulled my MVR, a minor in possession of alcohol showed up on there that is also 10 years old. I completely forgot about that but I did tell the hiring manager, and I did list it on my application.

He called me and said corporate denied me because of 2 DUI's! I explained to him that the MIP was NOT a DUI and I was not cited for a DUI, nor did I have alcohol of any kind in my system! He said that he understood, and he understands that you make mistakes when you're young. He even went on to tell me about something similar in his youth.

Anyways, he said that the situation sucks because he really wants me on board and that I am a perfect candidate for the position. He said he was going to email/call the big wigs at corporate and appeal their decision. He said not to get my hopes up though, because once corp has made a decision they usually don't change it. Told he'd let me know early next week.

I am seriously disappointed and upset about this. If they don't change their decision about me, am I pretty much done for life with applying again?

Oh well, I guess we'll see what comes of this next week.

The DUI is big but the fact that you are union is HUGE. with all the available drivers out there, they will not put a card toting union man in the drivers room to complain about waiting for loads or a supervisor switching trailers. we had a guy that came over from usf, he made a coment about the supervisor moving trailers taking work from drivers, guess where he doesnt work now.

They said, "listen here mr. Union law dog, law just don't go round here!"

I understand what you're saying. I do work at a union barn where we have the choice to join or not. I personally did not join. I let the hiring manager know this, and he had me write that out on a piece of paper, sign and date it, and he sent that to corporate with my application.

Are you crazy? How many available drivers are out there? We are approaching a big driver shortage in this country that's only going to get worse as time goes on. I don't think they care if you worked for a union line, all that's important is your work and driving record. I'm sure we've got guys all over the system that are former union drivers. We've got so many guys in Atlanta I can't say I know of any by name, but I'm sure we have them.

the country is having a driver shortage but OD is not. its a good place to work, our barn has people come in daily looking for work. they are also pulling folks from the dock for the driving school, creating a loyal army of drivers. the avg driver age at OD is much less than the industry.

can they legally ask that? never heard of a driver signing a paper that says he is not union.

It got brought up in conversation as he asked me some questions about my job now. It wasn't a legit "union paper" it was just a blank piece of paper and I wrote out that I, by choice, didn't join the union at my company. Maybe you're right, and he was looking out for me by doing that though.

I live on the south side of the ATL and thought about applying over at ODFL, but according to their website they don"t have any openings. I worked at old Robin and Lying for 8 years P+D and line. I thought ODFL would be the best choice around here, but if they over hire than I guess one wouldn't have a consistent amount of hours a week.
