Irregular schedules are a big factor!

I think most of us in this industry can relate to being tired at what seems normal hours to others. Everyone works irregular schedules, management and labor alike. Of course if you're driving, this can be a serious issue. All any of us can do is to try and rest during our off time as much as possible, problem is, that is also not always possible.

I have always thought the opportunity to bid 'off' shifts a blessing rather than a curse. It affords the option of shorter commute times and more quality time with my children. I am lucky enough that I can sleep anywhere at any time. Many are not so inclined.
 
This sort of thing is why Canadian HOS has a 16 hour shift rule. So you can take up to 2 hours to nap and not adversely affect your productivity. The off duty period also doesn't have to be 10 consecutive hours, instead allowing you to split it at 8 and 2 if you want.

We also take team drivers into consideration up here, allowing them to fully realize their productivity. No driver should feel penalized for packing it in a little early if they're tired. And they keep telling us exactly that. But the US HOS doesn't account for naps and penalizes the driver financially as a result.
 
this type of deal also effect dock guys who dont have a bid . for years we worked on call and would work usually a 10 hour shift with 9 hours off with a 2 hour work call . i know of 3 that fell to sleep either coming in or leaving and are no longer with us . by know you would think they would now they would get more and better work from guys that are not dead on their feet

IMHO the 14 hour rule for drivers is both a blessing and a curse at the same time. Sometimes a short power nap can do wonders on a long tour but at times you can't do it for fear of bumping up on the 14.
It is a blessing for me too. 12 hours work, 1 hour nap in morning, and the one I just woke up from,= 14
