Why are you still driving?

I see thread after thread on here where drivers cry about how terrible everything is from the pay to the treatment of drivers to truck stops and everything else.

My question to all you whiners (and you know who you are) is:

Why are you still doing this? If it's so terrible you should be willing to do whatever it takes to find something else to do. If you're too scared to get away from it, then shut up and keep working.

Next question:

If it's such a terrible profession and drivers don't act the way *you* think they should, what are you doing to improve things? Sitting around crying about how great it used to be doesn't count.

I'm proud of what I do and I make good money. I'm treated just as well as I've been treated anywhere else. If you aren't getting what you want, maybe YOU'RE the problem.

i actually, liked my job, up until the time i blew out my back, in April of 2014.

i only had to work all of about 40/45 hours per week. some weeks a bit less than 40..>!!

my only complaints were that i'd have a 10 foot pallet, with about 4,000 lbs of black pipe, and my electric pallet jack, rated at 4,000 lbs, could not lift it, nor pull it.....!!!!!!!

but some driver's gotta gripe about something. as you say, so do i, the person looking in the mirror is the problem.

as for doing anything about it..???

when pigs fly for some......

We all gripe about our jobs sometimes. I just don't understand these people who never have anything positive to say about their jobs. I don't know why they stay with the job. When I was a paramedic and realized I couldn't make a sustainable living, I moved on. When I worked for the state of Illinois and couldn't stand being in an office eight hours a day, I moved on. I just don't understand why people will stick with something they obviously hate instead of moving on and finding something else.

It's all about finding contentment in your life. Some of us find it, and some never do.

Because our crooked government refuses to start my Social Security check until 2 20 2016, yet I officially retire on 12 13 2015. Seems there is a little known law that says you have to be 62 for 30 consecutive days of the moth after your 62nd birthday. It's a &€%#&÷× rip off.

Seems to me you can apply for Social Security six months before you turn age 62. That's what I did.

I get the feeling that most feel as though they are trapped where they are and that there is no other pasture for them. You have moved from one pasture to another and each, it seems, was greener than the one before. Ours used to be greener and it has turned brown and many never considered jumping the fence. There are better places to work they are just fewer and farther between and one has to look continuously and persistently to find them. Good jobs don't stay on the market for long. Then there are some who have had problems and/or made mistakes since they got the job that they have now that would preclude them from getting hired elsewhere. I haven't filled out a job app for some 26 years now and would not feel comfortable filling one out with today's standards. It does seem like drivers are complainers by nature. We have had more than one ballwasher who complained, complained, complained about everything yet they were the manager's pet. You should have seen the look I got when I asked the one if it was OK if I took an 0800 start time and didn't complain all morning every morning.

I don't know of many perfect jobs. I have worked with people who hated their job everyday for over 30 years. They didn't like the local or the IBT, dues were too high etc. The trucks were too slow, wrong color, wrong brand & ----------- (fill in the blanks with a thousand other complaints). Many liked their previous jobs better. I have told some to go back to the land of milk & honey. These same ones are now drawing a pension while many have worked years & get no pension. One of the worst things for your health is to work at a job you don't like. I would work for much less at a job I liked. If I could only be happy driving a fast red Peterbilt then I would quit driving an old company owned truck & get my own.

Why am I still driving??? I am a poor man and I love to eat and stay warm. And back in 1963 when I got into this business, it was one one of the best "blue collar" job that an "uneducated" person could have, can't make that statement today. I am one of those who had the taste of "prime rib steaks" and now I have to eat pinto beans.

they must be hoping we die in that 30 day, "grace period"......lol

Hi Medic, You have met me face to face, I stay at Sysco in the hope that I'll see you once more. Seriously, I miss you but I like my work, it gets old doing the same run and I know I bitch about fog lights, thats my chief complaint, fog lights brights and super big riggers that can't keep their itty bitty 53' trailer in their own lane, after all I'm nearly twice as long as them and I do a pretty good job I think, thats my bitch, I ain't gonna bail out because of it though, my left eye may get my CDL but I'm not going out easy!

Yeah but I don't get my first check to feb 20. That's roughly 30 AFTER I have been retired for thirty days. Federal gubmit says you have to be of retirement age for 30 consecutive days of the same month to get your first check. I pity the fool who wants to retire on Jan 3 or later. Feb only has 28 days and uncle Sam don't give a crap.

Some people complain just for the sake of complaining. They don't really hate their jobs, but like to complain about anything and everything.

I'm like you. If I can't make a job or situation work, I move on. I rarely complain about anything, because in my opinion it serves no purpose. Actions speak louder than words. My employers have always known whether or not I'm happy. If I'm happy, I run harder. Last month I averaged 4,000 miles a week. There was one week last month I drove 4,500 miles. When I'm upset, I'll park the damn truck in a heartbeat with no damns to give about the load. CR England found that out the hard way. I arrived at the Burns Harbor terminal on a Thursday and dispatch told me nothing was moving until Monday, and I wasn't allowed to drive home, which was 3 hours away. That was the wrong thing to tell me, because I drove home and told them to pick their ::shit:: up at the airport.

I'll not be driving C.M.V.s before the end of 2017, not due to e-log mandate, just due to D.O.T. physical, so I've a wee bit of time to secure another form of income and I'm not complaining, at least not this time, in this thread.

I'm to continue this employment adventure mainly because as we age, fewer options are available because of health concerns for us as we age and sometimes folks get a bit frail in skeletal support, yet it's not a complaint, merely a observation. You're only as old as you feel.

My employer has recently corrected some truck problems resulting in the truck I've been driving over 4 years, running better and most likely improved fuel mileage and possibly before 2017, some Body parts upgrades that really have no effect on fuel mileage, just appearance.

Comments depend usually upon the mood of the writer where some comments appear completely negative while at times appear interspersed with humor.

It seems to me that I'm driving a truck that has a invisible to me sign denoting Reefer Parking Available and sometimes their Reefer is off.
It's really no big deal as they're usually gone before I depart.

I'm slowly working on a project that will support US after WE quit J.O.B. jail inside 1 to 1.25 years from today.

I hope something in this post helps someone in some way.

Thanks b 2 medic92 for a alternate approach to successful responses.

Whenever I've stopped enjoying my job, I've moved on. I refuse to live that way.....complaining about crap that I can't change. And when I've had enough that I no longer enjoy the job, it's good-bye time.
