Starting with Sysco on Wednesday and was wondering if you guys had any advice for getting things done faster? Or even just general tips. Been driving a little over a year, half oilfield and half flatbed.

Keep working at your own pace do not get discouraged and remember it is a job. Also get ready to work hard and be sore the first 1-2 months on the job. Find your own way of doing the job and hang in there like a hair in a biscuit.

Keep this in mind the faster you run the more they will put on you.
They will keep you out 12 to 14 hours sometimes more.
Also the service times on the manifest is nothing short of a mind game to make you move faster, they cut the times often.
if you get behind which is almost always don't get all worked up, it will only lead to a mistake or an accident.
Just keep a steady pace and give it time, learning to work your load and product recognition is the key to this job.
Good luck

I didn't buy into that theory when I first started but it's absolutely 100% true. Going faster only gets you more work. At my opco they run reports showing your actual times vs the estimates, finish early a few times and the router will start putting more on you those days. Then you've gotten so used to being off by a certain time that you run just a liiiiitle harder to still get done with the extra work. They see that you're moving even faster and put a little more on you the next time. Wash, rinse, repeat. Better to work at a steady safe pace from the beginning and not try to run.
Took them hiring a new router who didn't know me from the next guy for me to break the cycle. Now I take it easy and almost like magic they've gotten more manageable.

Thank you guys for your advice, I'll keep working at a safe steady pace. And the way the pay system was explained to me was i get hourly and on top of that by the case? Maybe i misunderstood it? Because that adds up to a decent chunk of money. Btw due to the background check today was my first day.

Pay should be either/or hourly or incentive whichever is higher.

IF you're ever to be driving nights, PLEASE avoid this mishap.
Does any SYSCO driver know this driver and how's he/she doing?

He DID NOT fall asleep, the drive cam footage showed that, what happened? It was pouring rain, a truck came by him, crowding him at a high rate of speed and he got loose, the drive cam showed the whole deal, I work with this man every night, he is a good driver and a better man, he is ok and was back to work the next night, I was extremely grateful that he was ok, he is my friend.

That was a very bad night, driving rain and high wind, could of happened to any one of us.

Every time I feel like rolling my eyes because a bump made the camera go off and they "need to talk" about how I was following 1/2 second too close, or doing 35 in a 40, or whatever I try to tell myself that the s

Hit "post" too soon...
I try to tell myself the stupid camera might save my job someday. Good to hear he's ok and the camera did what was intended.

I prefer the camera to work, when it doesn't I ask the shop to fix it, I got nailed on the phone, with an ear piece mind you, haven't heard back yet but DOT says its ok to have one in and talk, also, Sysco never presented the policy to the union, so I think I am good, if not I will take another vacation and fight it.

I doubt anything will come of it. I really do like the camera, I feel better when its working.

We have cameras where I work. But they only face out the window. I wouldn't like it facing me
Thats better than nothing, that post on here about the sysco losing it on the turnpike, the camera saved the driver, OHP said he went to sleep, the camera showed a whole different story, he never missed a night of work.

You of all people know how I resisted the cameras at first, now after it saving 2 jobs of men I know personally I am glad we have them.

GT I'm glad the camera saved the man's job. That's good to hear. I know some companies have the cameras like you but they don't have restrictions on stuff like talking on phone and eating

I never heard anything about eating and drinking, but on the phone your right about. IDK, I try and drive like my life depends on it, hopefully if I ever eat it the camera will protect my job like it has so many others.

When my buddy worked at sysco Asian foods they were told they can't eat while they drive and some drivers got caught eating but I don't know if they got in trouble

Yep non union. I know there sick policy is if you call in sick 3 times or maybe it's 4 you're fired....to me that doesn't seem right

We have cameras where I'm. When I'm driving down the road I just ignore it. But we are not allow to talk on the phone.
