ABF | ABF Bargaining Update: Slow Progress

O.k..........seems like Ernie Soehl isn’t falling for ArcBest’s line of mendacious crap......

New “Drug and Alcohol policy”.........yeah,....right. Drug addicts and alcoholics like working a 60 to 70 hour work week........

That’s one of the reasons that trucking as an industry has had a less than 1% drug and alcohol problem,........compared with other industries having roughly a 10% rate on average.......

Looks like ArcBest has money to waste on a redundant and unneeded expansion of an invasive drug policy that could be used to harass employees......

“Hair samples”?..........Hilarious!......If that somehow passed,.......I’d recommend everyone shave their heads so that the only hair the company could collect ,......would be pubic hair.......

Or,.....the hair off my butt cheeks.....

Stick it to ‘me, Ernie! That company “ Proposal” is completely bogus, disingenuous, and petty.......representative of upper management that has lost respect for the employees who do the actual work of this company.......

This will be a good starting point.

A very good start! We have to maintain HAZ-MAT licenses ....for the companies' benefit,....at OUR own cost,.........We have to work open air docks in all kinds of weather....unheard-of in the 21st Century,..........We have to risk our lives daily in the most dangerous conditions an industrial occupation can offer........How many people died on the highways last year,...versus how many died in all other occupations?

We are NOT covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938,.....so, unless you NEGOTIATE it,...they don't have to pay you overtime,...or minimum wage......( Go stop at Chicago's Lake Station truckstop, and ask one of those steelhaulers waiting for a load if they are paying him to wait.........or ask a guy in the bullpen of a food warehouse if he's paid to wait for a door to unload...)

Younger people are staying away in droves,...and the industry admits there is a severe labor shortage,......we work in 20th Century conditions....sometimes 18th Century conditions..........

And,.....they claim their Labor Costs are too high!

How about this? Why don't you go to an Amazon warehouse, and offer the people inside ABF's top rate to work the dock or drive truck? Pension and H & W included......

I will bet the farm .....half of those Amazon people will quit in the first week,......and go back to those nice, warm, clean, safe Amazon warehouses,.....and the other half will go the next week.......( I ain't saying a word about how many would fail the drug test.....)......

Your Labor Costs are too "high",....only in relation to how much wages and benefits cut into corporate profits and bonuses.......ABF has now become like every other employer that regards it's own employees ....as an impediment to profits,......and a "necessary evil",...to be tolerated and paid as cheaply as they can get away with.....

The company also is seeking new “fitness for duty” requirements that would subject employees to discipline.

Really not such a bad idea!

Since safe transportation of a consignees freight is of paramount importance, it would only be reasonable to extend the same requirement to any carrier transporting freight from or to an ABF facility. Three ABF compliance officers (new teamster bids) to cover each 8 hour shift, trained in DOT standards testing, with one additional to cover holidays, vacations. For transparency, the driver that picks up the trailer freight in the case of OTR fright, he will have to verify at destination with inbound teamster compliance clerk.

In the case of interline/local deliveries, monthly our newly formed teamster compliance officers will perform random checks at their facilities or en route....this will be done on overtime before or after the compliance officer performs his assigned shift, at his discretion.

Carriers that fail to meet ABF's minimum accepted standard of professionalism will be regionally suspended after 2 "unfit for duty" findings for 2 weeks....a third infraction would result in permanent banishment.

The employees should also be supplied with climate controlled shacks with plumbing and wi-fi...and a $2.00 hourly premium for attempting to converse in Tagalog, Russian, Ukranian, Iraqi, Spanish, Indian, etc...languages.

We have the skill and the will to pull this off!
