A RUNAWAY driverless truck has smashed into a harbourside home in Sydney's east, causing major structural damage.

It is understood no-one was in the house when the 19 tonne truck crashed into the front foyer of a two-storey house in Tivoli Avenue, Rose Bay, about 7.45am (AEST) this morning.
The unladen vehicle, which had been parked on a vacant block next door, rolled down an embarkment and onto an elevated driveway leading to the house.

NSW fire brigade spokesman Gordan Boath said it was believed that none of the four residents was home at the time, and no-one was injured.

Mr Boath said the house had suffered damage to its roof and walls.

"The cabin of the truck has caused serious structural damage to the front of the house," he said.

The brigade quickly cleaned up 100 litres of diesel fuel that spilled from the truck's ruptured fuel tank.

Runaway truck crashes through roof

A NEWLY renovated Sydney harbourside home might have to be demolished after a driverless truck went through its roof.

The 19-tonne semi-trailer was parked on a vacant construction block in Tivoli Ave at Rose Bay when it rolled down an embankment and into the nearby drive.

It careered down the driveway and into the double-storey home about 7.45am yesterday.

Police said a family of four was inside the house at the time of the incident but no one was injured.

Driver Gary Thompson said he had forgotten to put a major brake on when he parked the truck.
