AT least four cattle lay dead on a roadside north of Caramut yesterday after a truck carrying heifers and steers rolled off the road.

Koroit police and the Warrnambool traffic management unit spent the day rounding up other roaming cattle and diverting traffic at the accident scene about 500 metres north of Caramut.

Yesterday morning's accident happened on a notorious section of road where the Hamilton Highway veers sharply to the left at the intersection of the Glenthompson-Caramut Road. It is believed more cattle were injured and would have to be put down.

The truck driver was reported to be safe but his injuries, if any, were unknown.
