A TRUCK driver has died after his semi-trailer loaded with fertiliser hit a tree in Melbourne's east.

The 49-year-old Bunyip man lost control of his truck in Gruyere about 12.15pm (AEST) today, Victoria Police said.
"The truck struck a tree and tipped onto its side, finally coming to rest on its roof," Senior Constable Karla Dennis said.

The Metropolitan Ambulance Service flew paramedics to the scene and sent a road ambulance, spokesman Phil Cullen said.

"Sadly the driver died at the scene," he said.

WorkCover had been notified, Snr Const Dennis said.

The man's death brings the state's road toll to 135, compared to 159 at the same time last year.
