SAN DIEGO -- A 19-year-old Huntington Beach man was killed when he ran in front of a tractor-trailer on Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton in an apparent case of *******, authorities said Tuesday.

The victim was hit by a big rig on southbound Interstate 5, just south of a rest stop, while running from California Highway Patrol officers, according to the CHP.

The officers had seen the man after they came across a Toyota Celica parked on the right shoulder of the freeway. When they contacted him, he handed over his cell phone asking them to speak to his mother, and then ran southbound on the shoulder, the CHP said.

He darted in front of big rig and was killed upon impact, authorities said.

In an unrelated accident, a 26-year-old man who was driving in excess of 100 mph was killed Tuesday when the car he was in plowed into the back of a parked semi tractor at a rest area, authorities said.

The victim, whose name was not immediately released, apparently lost control of the southbound Volkswagen Passat at about 1 a.m. after exiting the San Diego (5) Freeway, south of Birmingham Drive, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The Volkswagen Passat, which had been traveling at a speed of more than 100 mph, entered the Manchester viewpoint rest area and slammed into the parked truck, instantly killing the Passat's driver
