A truck driver delivering supplies to the site of the Visalia Sports Park on Wednesday underestimated the truck's height and snagged power lines, causing outages and the closure of Highway 63 through the night.

The incident happened about 2:15 p.m. Wednesday when a Central Freight Lines Inc. truck driven by John Anthony Luna, 45, of Fresno drove into the power lines while delivering supplies to the construction site at Highway 63 and Riverway Drive, said Visalia Fire Department Battalion Chief Doyle Sewell.

Luna said he attempted to turn into the construction site of the new Visalia Sports Park when the front end of his 18-foot-tall trailer snagged the lower of two sets of power lines.

"I thought I had plenty of room," Luna said. "I didn't even know I was hung up."

Still moving slowly forward, the truck snapped nine poles like twigs, causing the entire quarter-mile stretch of power line to fall across Highway 63, said Sewell.
