Let's burn up the switchboards of the members of the Joint Select Committee on Solvency of Multiemployer Pensions on Thursday and Friday. As Dana Vargo, one of our pension committee leaders in Canton, Ohio stated on Tuesday...

"For those not attending the Rally on Thursday - we need to do our part by making these calls to the Joint Select Committee. Keep in mind that we don't usually suggest calling Senators and Congressman from other States/Districts because they don't have a responsibility to us. THIS IS DIFFERENT! They were chosen by their leaders to do a job, and this duty requires them to come up with a solution to the pension crisis by the end of November for all of those involved, not just their constituents! The fact that they are choosing not to come to the Hearing on Thursday shows that they are not taking their duty seriously. We need to make sure they are aware of how important this is.
For those attending the Rally - thank you for going on Thursday. But... on Friday - we need you to be making these calls during the Hearing!
Then, starting next week, we all need to keep calling, calling, calling. And call Gibbs, Renacci, whoever your Congressman is, along with Senator Portman. Those elected officials should be concerned for you, our State and District, and themselves, especially if they are running for office- which all of Ohio's Congressman are up for reelection. Tell them to contact the Joint Select Committee members. If they aren't for the Butch Lewis Act, what is their plan?
EVERYONE - WE NEED TO DIG IN!!! "

Dear Multiemployer Pension Plan Participant,
The pensions of hundreds of thousands of retirees is at risk and we need to send a strong message to Congress to fix this crisis. These retirees earned their pension through decades of hard work and we need to ensure the retirement they earned is protected.
Come join me in Columbus on July 12 at 11am as United Mine Workers of America President Cecil Roberts leads a rally on the steps of the Ohio Statehouse. We will send a strong message to our elected officials to preserve the pensions for these hard-working Americans that earned their retirement by doing what's right: getting up and going to work.
Join us Thursday, July 12 at 11am at Ohio State Capitol, 1 Capitol Square, Columbus, Ohio 43215. Please contact Ohio AFL-CIO Area Campaign Coordinator Jessica Vernon for more information or to RSVP.
About 200 multi-employer pension plans across the country stand on the brink of failure and Congress must act to protect them. Labor unions have been working diligently for years with key members of Congress trying to come up with a solution to this pension crisis.
Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, a lead sponsor of the measure, called the introduction of the “Butch Lewis Act of 2017,” named after the former Teamsters Local 100 president who died in late 2015 while fighting to prevent cuts to Central States Pension Fund, one of the proudest days of his life. He said workers deserve to receive the pensions they worked so hard for to get.
“This bill is comprehensive. It includes the miners, the Teamsters and others,” he said. “It makes no cuts. We started with the ideas of no cuts and there will be no cuts. This is a plan that will work.”
Join us Thursday, July 12 at 11am at Ohio State Capitol, 1 Capitol Square, Columbus, Ohio 43215. Please contact Ohio AFL-CIO Area Campaign Coordinator Jessica Vernon for more information or to RSVP.
In Solidarity,
Tim
