The body of a Surrey truck driver whose 18-wheeler full of groceries plunged off the Trans-Canada Highway into the Vedder Canal early Tuesday was found about five hours later by a private helicopter pilot who happened to be in the area.

RCMP Staff Sgt. Bob Beaudoin said investigators believe the driver fell asleep at the wheel or had a medical condition that caused the truck to swerve and “bounce off the guard rails” and then finally plunge into the canal at about 4 a.m. Tuesday.

The driver, 32-year-old Jartinder Singh Bath, was thrown from the transport truck owned by Abbotsford company Tri-Mark Trucking. The truck was totally submerged in the waters of the rain-swollen canal.
