CENTRAL STATES TO LAWMAKERS: PAY UP OR SHUT UP: Last week, trustees for the Central States Pension Fund sent a letter to House and Senate lawmakers from Michigan expressing dismay that the lawmakers urged the Treasury Department to reject the Fund’s application to cut vested benefits. Central States says that the cuts are necessary to prevent the plan from going insolvent. In the letter, the trustees said that the only alternative would be for Congress to pass legislation providing additional funding either to the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation or to the plan itself. The price tag: $11 billion.
