Going from $300,000 to 2.6 may have had a little influence.

Actually it was more like a million a year vs. 2.6 at UCLA. Steve Alford had just signed a ten year contact with the University of New Mexico for about a million a year. He was all over the news in Albuquerque about how happy he was to stay and coach the Lobos etc. Seventy-two hours later he's leaving for UCLA. Reminds me of Rich Rodriguez.
