BLANCA - A potato truck driver whose rig hit the San Luis Express train Wednesday afternoon has been cited with eight counts of careless driving causing bodily injury.

Colorado State Patrol Sgt. Ann Robinson said trucker Billy Moses, 35, of Morgantown, N.C., was driving a new rig and hauling a load of San Luis Valley potatoes out of Blanfort Potato Company at the southwest edge of Blanca shortly after 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. Moses apparently did not hear the train’s whistle, crossed the tracks and hit the westbound train carrying 56 passengers and four crew members.

The truck caught fire. Robinson estimated damage to the truck at more than $100,000.
