Fla. jury awards $300 million in ex-smoker's suit - Yahoo! News

MIAMI – A South Florida jury on Thursday ordered Philip Morris USA to pay $300 million to a former smoker, agreeing that the tobacco company's negligence was the cause of her emphysema.

The award for Cindy Naugle, 61, is the largest to date among thousands of lawsuits filed in the state against tobacco companies.

"Cindy admitted her fault to the jury," her attorney, Robert W. Kelley, said in a statement. "But Philip Morris refused to accept any responsibility for her emphysema, even though she was an addicted customer for 25 years

United Parcel Service Inc. plans to raise rates an average of 4.9% for packages shipping by ground and air, including packages sent to other countries from the U.S.

The world's largest package shipper said the increase for air express and international shipments is based on a 6.9% rise in the base rate and a 2% reduction in the air and international fuel surcharge.

The new rates take effect Jan. 4, when fuel surcharge tables for air express and ground services also will be adjusted.

Plain and simple. The companies can not keep hauling it for a loss. Some companies thought they could make a run at it but the strong will survive.

The answer is UPS. Thats why they paid 2.5 billion dollars to get out of the Master Freight Agreement last year. Now ABF and YRC are taking a huge hit financially on that. It is so bad that all of us have take an 18 month pension freeze. Now all of us have to give 15% of our wages back to YRC, just so they can survive. I kind wonder where that 2.5 billion is now?

On Saturday, November 21, 2009, the U.S. Senate voted to approve the motion to proceed with debate on a health insurance reform bill - the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The bill will ensure that all Americans have access to quality, affordable health care and will create the transformation within the health care system necessary to contain costs. Unfortunately, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act currently includes a provision that would impose an excise tax on insurers for higher-cost health plans that is simply a huge middle-class tax hike. The excise tax would be shifted onto workers and potentially force steep reductions in benefits or exorbitant increases in costs...

This person would NEVER had been on the street but for one person Huckabee clemency record revisted after shootings - Yahoo! News
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – As governor of Arkansas, Mike Huckabee had a hand pardoning or commuting many more prisoners than his three immediate predecessors combined. Maurice Clemmons, the suspect in Sunday's slaying of four Seattle-area police officers, was among them.......

On Monday, Huckabee said he takes responsibility for making Clemmons eligible for parole in 2000, and called the case a failure of the justice systems in Arkansas and Washington. Huckabee cited the length of Clemmons' sentence — 108 years — and a state judge's recommendation that it be reduced as factors in his decision.

"If I could have known nine years ago that this guy was capable of something of this magnitude, obviously I would have never granted a commutation. It's sickening," Huckabee said on Fox News Channel's "The O'Reilly Factor."

Was the person that gunned down the police officers a YRC employee?

Bizarre calf mutilations found on Colorado ranch

SAN LUIS, Colo. – A creepy string of calf mutilations in southern Colorado has a rancher and sheriff's officials mystified.

Four calves were found dead in a pasture just north of the New Mexico state line in recent weeks. The dead calves had their skins peeled back and organs cleared from the rib cage. One calf had its tongue removed.

But rancher Manuel Sanchez has found no signs of human attackers, such as footprints or ATV tracks. And there are no signs of an animal attack by a coyote or mountain lion. Usually predators leave pools of blood or drag marks from carrying away the livestock.

Two officers from the Costilla County Sheriff's Office have investigated the mutilations but say they don't know what's killing the calves.

"There's nothing really to go by," said Sanchez, who's ranched for nearly 50 years. "I can't figure it out."
