An off-duty police officer is among those killed in an apparent wrong-way crash on Staten Island Friday morning, the officer’s department said.

Three officers and one civilian employee with the Linden Police Department were driving in a sedan that was traveling the wrong way on the West Shore Expressway and crashed head on with a tractor-trailer, according to a captain at the department.

Two of the three Officers didn't notice that their buddy who was driving had enter 440 the wrong way. And they don't know yet if Alcohol was involved, really.

I think you and I both know the deal here Sugarfoot. I wonder if the PBA shield attached to the windshield with suction cups might have blocked the drivers view of the "Wrong Way" signs.

LINDEN -- Three off-duty Linden police officers and a passenger in their vehicle had left a Staten Island strip club before the fatal wrong-way crash that killed one of the officers and the passenger, the NYPD said.

Another article. Not to be crass about this, but I wonder if the town would have flags at half-staff if it were civilians in the same circumstances.

LINDEN, N.J. (AP) — A car carrying three off-duty New Jersey police officers from a visit to a strip club drove the wrong way down a New York City highway and crashed head-on into a tractor-trailer early Friday, killing an officer and a civilian and critically injuring two other policemen.

Hours before the crash, the officer driving the car posted a photo on his Instagram page of three shot glasses filled with what he identified as "Jack Daniels Fire on the house." Police said they were investigating whether drinking explains how the group ended up driving north in the southbound lane of the Staten Island highway.

No, it would be just a blip on the news. Fortunately, the trucker was not seriously injured. I hope this is a lesson to others, Law Enforcement and Civilians. Drive Sober...or Get Pulled Over, it means EVERYBODY! It's not just a slogan.

Looking for love. They should have stayed home and logged onto Christian Mingle.com.

Another up-date article. The Mayor's comments didn't include any sympathy for the Trucker they hit. I guess we really don't matter to anyone.

Last year a Lodi, NJ teacher driving drunk in the early morning hours hit a Bergen County cop who was stopped in the right lane of the highway with no warning lights on. The BC cop was badly injured but is alive as is the teacher. The teacher is facing jail time. I wonder if the Linden cop will be prosecuted as harshly for a much more serious offense?

LODI, N.J. (WABC) -- A New Jersey teacher accused in a drunk driving crash that injured a police officer is due in court Tuesday after a planned hearing last week was rescheduled.

Michael Ettz is under indictment on aggravated assault and other charges for the April incident on Route 46 in Lodi.

Prosecutors say Ettz, a teacher at Lodi High School, left Bergen County police officer Daniel Breslin with a fractured skull and other injuries after hitting Breslin's cruiser.

Around 1:50 a.m. near Summit Avenue, Breslin was pulled over in his cruiser alongside the other officer's car, assisting him with a broken radio, when his car was rear-ended by Ettz's vehicle.

Breslin, 39, needed surgery and was hospitalized in critical condition.

The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission confirms that Ettz had his license suspended on Nov. 19, 2012, for a previous conviction for operating under the influence.

Published reports say Ettz has been offered a plea deal that would involve a seven-year prison term.

Yes T, I remember this case.

Yes T, I remember this case.

It just came out this past week that that the BC cop just stopped in the traffic lane with no emergency lights on. I like the part about "contradicting earlier reports". And what kind of brains does it take to stop in a traffic lane that way, especially for a cop?

Contradicting earlier reports, a Bergen County Police Officer did not have his emergency lights on when a Lodi High School teacher – allegedly driving drunk – rear-ended him on Route 46 last year, leaving him in critical condition, a Bergen County assistant prosecutor said.

Officer Daniel Breslin had stopped his police SUV on the highway in Lodi to help another officer who was having trouble with his police radio, and had pulled alongside the other officer’s car, which was on the shoulder of the road, police said. It was then that Michael Ettz, a popular math teacher and track coach, slammed into the back of Breslin’s car, they said.

If you read all the comments, they're all in favor of the Officer. I'm not condoning drinking and driving, but we have all seen Police from a wide variety of Agencies do very stupid things, driving and otherwise.

Also, just to be clear, I'm not sticking up for or in any way condoning what the teacher did by driving drunk. I just wonder if the Linden cop in the Staten Island fatality will be prosecuted and punished as severely.

I agree, he should be, period. They're being treated as if they were killed and injured in the line of Duty.
As Chief, I would be addressing the force and telling them how these Officers disgraced the law they swore to up hold and the City of Linden, dismissed.

An example of how a momentary error in judgement, can effect so many long term.
I see the medias spin is focusing on the victims in the car & omitting the effects of this crash on the innocent trucker.
From the looks of the car,I'm surprised anyone survived.

Well then the only other thing I can say on this crash.
Is to pray that the Lord will have mercy on all involved.
That the healing of thoughts, memories & body parts, will come to pass,in Jesus name,AMEN.

More keeps coming out about this guy. How the heck did he get hired as a cop? Unbelievable.

LINDEN — A city officer who crashed his car while driving the wrong way on a Staten Island highway last week, fatally injuring a fellow officer and a passenger and critically injuring another officer, had previously been charged with drunk driving in two separate incidents over the last four years and was captured on a police dash camera unable to complete a sobriety test in 2013.
...
In all, Abad, 27, was in eight accidents from September 2005 to June 2013, according to state records. He received violations in only two of those accidents, the records show.

Apparently, Roselle and Rahway Cops don't believe in Professional Courtesy. I think the Chief should resign asap. How did he become a cop and stay on the force? He couldn't drive the cruiser.
