"Experts have long known that rich people generally live longer than poor people. But a growing body of data shows a more disturbing pattern: Despite big advances in medicine, technology and education, the longevity gap between high-income and low-income Americans has been widening sharply."

I have family history of living to about 104. My mother in law swears she'll outlive me by a day. She's 94, my mom's 93. You're stuck with me for a while...

    Makes sense.
Alcoholics, drug addicts and throw in criminals for the most part are going to be poor as a result of their behavior. They're naturally going to die earlier because of behavior. Cigarette smokers are generally lower income also. Nothing surprising here.

True. You drive by the homeless shelter in Portland and there's always a group outside the building smoking.

Maybe the reason is lack of healthcar moor our poor
I thought Barry care was supposed to fix all that

In fact listening to Bernie you would think that nothing has been done because every speech he has to "fix the broken health care system "

It is easy to blame the poor for making bad choices isn't it? It's more complicated than that. Tobacco companies target lower income communities to encourage the habit, and the stresses of living in poverty and sometimes hopelessness also cause people to turn to cigarettes.

Lack of access to healthcare and smoking cessation programs are also to blame.

I don't know the exact statistics but I assume quite a few are older baby boomer types who started when they were young and weren't subjected to anti smoking campaigns and Surgeon Generals warnings etc. Smoking was the social norm in those days.

No that's just one aspect of it that was mentioned. I'm sure improper nutrition is another factor. Lack of nutrional food due to the higher cost versus high calorie high fat foods for example. The "bad" food is cheaper. You can feed more people and they feel more full and content eating the garbage versus it's more nutritious counterpart.
