The center and right lanes have been reopened to traffic on Interstate 75, according to state police. The northbound side will remain closed for investigators after the crash turned fatal on Monday. State police said they hope to have the northbound side reopened by 6 or 7 p.m.
Police said the accident took place one mile south of a construction project where the highway merged. Witnesses said a driver of a tractor-trailer drove at normal speed into waiting traffic. Police said the driver could have been asleep at the wheel. Three major explosions followed, police said, and the driver of that tractor-trailer died in the crash. Both sides of the interstate were shut down between the 11-mile marker and the 13-mile marker. Those headed northbound should exit at La Plaisance Road to get around the crash.
