The man driving the large flatbed truck that killed a woman waiting at a Margate bus stop on Monday said he has epilepsy -- a condition that prohibits him from driving that type of commercial truck under state and federal laws.

Mark Guarino, 41, of Margate, told reporters Monday that he is epileptic and takes medication for the condition, but didn't believe he had a seizure when the accident occurred. A witness saw him slouched over the wheel when the 18-wheeler rolled into the bus stop, killing Lormicia Hyacinthe, 60.

The accident happened in front of the Atlantic Professional Plaza on West Atlantic Boulevard. Witnesses say Guarino was traveling east when he began slowly drifting to the right. He knocked down a Florida Power & Light utility pole before slamming into the bus stop, Margate police said.

Hyacinthe, who was waiting for the bus, died in the crash. She was trapped under the wreckage for nearly five hours while police and fire-rescue crews lifted the power lines
