A Marietta police officer came within a second and about an inch of losing his life while he was making a traffic stop on Interstate 75 early Friday morning.

Officer Eric Henderson is alive no thanks to the careless truck driver who struck the officer's car and kept on going. Detectives now want the public’s help in finding that trucker.

The videotape from Officer Henderson’s dashboard camera shows him pulling over a car at 4:59 a.m. on I-75 southbound in Marietta. Officer Henderson stopped his car behind the other vehicle, on the shoulder on the right side of the highway.

"As he [Officer Henderson] is beginning to open up the driver's door and is in the process of stepping out, a tractor trailer swerves over onto the shoulder," said Marietta Police Department spokesman David Baldwin, “and the right rear of the tractor trailer actually impacts the door, as it's opening up."

The tractor trailer just brushed the car door, rocking the police car, side-to-side, briefly. It was Officer Henderson's brush with death.

"He was probably within a second or two of life and death, literally,” Officer Baldwin told 11Alive News. “I mean, he was literally in the process of putting his foot out onto the shoulder to step out of the car when he was struck."
