(CBS) CHICAGO The driver of a semi-truck is dead and his wife and three children are hospitalized early this morning after the truck rear-ended another semi on the Bishop Ford Freeway.
The family of five from Missouri was inbound on the Bishop Ford near 103rd Street after midnight when their semi hit the other truck, which had slowed for traffic. The truck driver, William Cummings, and his wife and three children were all in the cab of the truck.
"It hit so hard that for about 100 feet behind the truck, you could see transmission parts falling off [his truck]. It was a hell of an impact,” Langford said.
While Illinois State Police were not confirming the information late Wednesday morning, earlier it was learned that they interviewed the oldest daughter, Becky.
When questioned by police, Becky said her little brother was on her father's lap, while she and her sister were in the sleeper berth of the truck's cab. State police said the children were unrestrained.
