Hoffa’s Executive Assistant Willie Smith was charged with multiple corruption violations, including racketeering, for accepting six tickets to an exclusive Playboy Super Bowl Party from a major Teamster employer, Southern Wine & Spirits.
But a three-person panel appointed by Hoffa whitewashed the charges and cleared Smith of any wrongdoing. The panel found that Hoffa’s aide didn’t have fun at the party, didn’t stay long, and didn’t know that the tickets had any value.

The June 23 ruling from Judge Barbara S. Jones, the Independent Review Officer (IRO) for the IBT consent order, exposed and rejected the Hoffa panel findings.
Judge Jones wrote the panel ignored the evidence that “Smith knew that the six admissions to the Super Bowl Party that [Hoffa administration Vice President Rome] Aloise procured for him were obtained from an IBT employer.”
In addition, according to Jones, the panel ignored that the tickets were a “thing of value” under federal law and were being sold for $1,000 each. Under federal law, it is illegal for a Teamster official to take a thing of value from a Teamster employer.
Hoffa now has twenty days to report a punishment for Smith to Judge Jones, or the issue will go to the Judge for a decisions.
Smith should be planning for his retirement. With his multiple Teamster pensions, it should be a very comfortable one.
