A Kentucky weigh station that closed earlier this month will soon reopen with new upgrades to help CMV inspectors detect violations — even while vehicles are still in motion.

The weigh station is located on I-75 southbound approximately two miles north of Crittenden.

The weigh station was closed April 10, 2023, and the closure is scheduled to end on Friday, April 21.

During the closure, crews installed new technology, “including road and tire sensors, which can monitor commercial vehicles for flat/worn tires.”

Also installed is a a ‘weight in motion’, or WIM, system, which officials say “can make roads safer through intelligent enforcement.”

They must slow, probably 15 years ago I was in line at the scale house in Minnesota at the Hudson Wisconsin border, the truck ahead of me pulled on the scale and was just sitting there a little too long and then the scale master comes out and kicks the right rear outer tire on the trailer...it was flat, that driver got to go to the reserved parking area in the back.

I knew a driver who was just starting in the industry driving a bull wagon for a friend who was struggling to get started in the business. The tractor & trailer were both old & had several safety violations. The rig was over weight & axle placement did not meet the bridge formula regulations for that state. He was stopped at a scale house in Missouri & told to park in back. The driver did not have enough funds to pay the fine which totaled more than the rig would probably bring at auction. He got his bag, radio & started walking away, He told them this is the final straw & he was quitting, he was never home & his wife was making threats to leave him if he did not spend more time at home. The crew at the scales had no way to take care of the cattle if the truck was left there. He said he thought they were going to call his bluff & he had walked almost out of hearing when he was stopped & told to get that rig out of the state & not to bring it back till the defects were fixed.
