FedEx Freight | Layoffs?

At gsp we lost 2 city drivers 1 dock worker (only one we had), he had 14 yrs with co. Don't understand that one . And i don't know how many road drivers if any at all, you wold think 14 yrs would buy something

The drivers sitting home will now be loading freight.

I think you have a misconception, drivers are not gods i am a driver and right is right people are people . And with this i say if it were you, your mind would change very quickly. If someone is hired 13 yrs after you and you lost your job instead of them. Forget about classification think of people instead

Not a misconception. This is what they have done at National over the past year. They eliminate or lay off full time dock workers and make the drivers load the freight. When they eliminated my full time position last year, they replaced me with line haul drivers who didn't know they were going to have to work the dock. Now when they hire a driver, they tell them they will be working a lot of dock hours. In fact, they just made a new rule at National, a driver now has more dock seniority if he's been there a year than the full time dock guy that has 20 years under his belt. I think it's pretty crappy to lay off a full time dock worker with more years than a driver and have the driver work the dock instead. His years of service should account for something.

DC; the entire industry is shifting away from full time dockworkers to dock drivers. Have you considered getting trained?

Well, now that I'm part time, I don't think I can sign up. I don't really want to drive, even though most likely I'd be on the dock everyday. They never offered me to go to the yard when they were forcing the lower seniority people to get certified. I told one OM that I would do it on my 2am shift, but he said, "You don't want to go out there." He was right, but they never sent me out, Someone thought I couldn't lift the dollie, which is not true, I don't know why they thought that, but I didn't fight it because I really didn't want to get stuck on an overnight yard bid. I have four kids and I'm not a daytime sleeper.

They are turning the dock at National in to the dock at Freight. Only full time dock will driver/dock and the rest part time. I feel for the guys that have been full time dock for 20 years, don't want to drive, and now will have less dock seniority than a one year driver. It wouldn't be so bad if FedEx Corp. wouldn't have lied to all of us when they said no one would lose their job and no one would have to become a driver to keep full time dock status. They're just wrong to treat the people like that. I am not working right now due to the drop in freight and probably wont get the call before 90 days is up. As of March3rd, I will probably not be employed by them anymore. Hopefully that is not the case, even though FedEx does people wrong, I like that type of work and the guys I work with are the greatest. I've applied to many other trucking companies, but it seems when they see me coming, the positions have automatically been filled, being female and all. SAIA did it to me 3 times. The guy interviewed me and then lied to me and my buddy that works part time SAIA dock told me they hired 3 guys that didn't know how to drive a forklift, and they knew I had 10 years of dock experience. Now that I am off work, trying to find a job, the pickings aren't good. But I'll stay positive and the Lord will be by my side in these tough times. Merry Christmas to you and to all and those that got the FedEx boot, keep the faith.

Well I spoke with a fellow laid off driver today and I heard some interesting information. He said he took the part time dock driver instead of the furlough and last week he was starting around 4pm. I guess he has been putting in between 8 and 12 hours a night. I found this to be concerning since FXF needed to cut back on full time positions. He works the dock, then he is asked to make shuttle runs paid by the mile, then comes back to his home terminal and goes home. I think he may be getting annoyed by this practice since he is working like a full time worker and not getting any benefits whatsoever. Sad, makes me think twice about this company that I held in such high regard.

On a good note, I applied for unemployment benefits and it is already set up for me. I received my award letter and what I will get for the next 26 weeks. FXF cannot dispute the fact that they got rid of my job and laid me off. I took the furlough and even though we are offered a severance package I am still qualified for full unemployment pay. I have to tell them when I do receive the pay but according to California state law severance doesn't effect my eligibility for pay. Thank God and California state.

Make sure your friend watches his hours. In Washington State, once you hit 32 hours in a week, you're full time.

That's nice about your unemployment not being affected by the severance package.

Thank goodness we have some socialist tendencies in this country!

Good luck to you and I hope it is indeed just a furlough.
