Chicago Local 710 clerical workers at YRC Freight and Holland in Chicago have voted down their latest contract offer from the companies and are taking a strike vote! Stay tuned for new developments. Remember, "A Harm To One, Is A Harm To All"!

Now, will the drivers & dock rank & file honor an office workers picket line? Because if they do, the Office Clerical job action will grind everything to a halt. Or will the Local tell the dock & drivers to cross a picket line? If a line does go up, & everyone honors the picket, you will see a settlement within a week. And that will set the tone for what might come contract time. But, a lot of if's. von.

I would honor their line. And not cross it. Only a scab would. We have to watch each other's back. If it weren't for clerks we would have no paperwork. So you can't do anything anyways.

FYI, remember 2004?

"NEW YORK -- USF Corp. shut down its Red Star division on Sunday after a handful of office workers in Philadelphia demanded union representation, prompting a company-wide strike.

Red Star was a less-than-truckload carrier operating in the U.S. Northeast.

On Friday, 15 office workers at Red Star's Philadelphia terminal demanded representation from the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, which represents 1,500 Red Star drivers and dockworkers. USF said the union told other Red Star employees to strike.

“The unexpected and unilateral job action initiated on Friday by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters had triggered a loss of customers and revenue to a point where Red Star would never be able to recover from the business losses caused by this Teamster job action,” said USF chairman and chief executive officer Richard DiStasio.

He said 20 per cent of Red Star customers took their business elsewhere."

Not an easy answer. Those 15 workers wanted better pay & benefits than what they had. So they decided on a job action. They ended up without a job. But life went on & they all found something to pay their bills. Did they end up with something better? Who knows? Looking back I would like to ask them if they thought it was worth it a year or 2 later. It was worth it to them when they asked for Union representation. Hindsight is easy, the future a little harder. von.

I worked for a small airfreight forwarder based in Romulus Mich. from 1973 to 1981. Four Teamster drivers and three clerks. Around 1979 two of the clerks signed union cards. We four drivers helped the two clerks with their picket line which no-one would cross. Only took one night and the three clerks became Teamsters.

Life is like a crap shoot, ya gotta roll em.

Pretty sure we have 2 billing centers and outsource the overflow overseas. Our supervisors print the bills and manifests when clerks call off. As far as honoring a clerical picket line, let us know how that goes. Separate contracts sounds like a slippery slope to me.

Any one remember what happened to 705 Chicago guys when they held thier gound and would not go along with the program? There won't be anything near resembling a strike. The days of the Teamster Union backing you up for a work stoppage are over, laughable . Yes the good old days are long gone.

I've been away from Illinois for a long time but one great thing about Chicago Illinois, besides the Cubs and the Bears, is their strength of union.
I can't see any of them crossing anyone's picket line let alone their own barns.
