Not directly UPS related but this site can help you or a friend that has back issues.
It will help you understand why UPS preaches back safety and proper lifting techniques so much.

A herniated disc is nothing to take lightly. L-4 and L-5 are the most prone to injury.
You DO NOT want to experience the pain before and after surgery.
You can go from an Epidural Shot to a Microdiscectomy up to a Spinal Fusion that will forever alter you.

If it's of no interest to you than carry on...but it's here for those that are interested, those that have had back injury and have returned to work and those that want to educate themselves to prevent an occurrence.

There is also information on Cervical Spine Injuries.

It seems that most who have the surgery regret it afterwards. I've known many with this problem and there's only 1 person who has told me it helped. Most rely on exercise for help and say they'll never allow them to operate. None of these companies preach back safety because they care about your back. What the do care about is what your lawyer will try to get from them when you realize your back will never be the same again.

It all depends on the individuals medical needs and suggested diagnosis, the individuals medical beliefs, their situation and the option they choose for pain relief.

We have a bunch of guys were surgery has been the only option for some kind of relief. It's helped them tremendously, but they will forever have to alter the way they do things. Hence the proper way to lift and pull etc. If they wish to work in the same job environment until retirement.

They do care about your back, that's why they preach it like crazy and drill it into our heads by breaking our bad habits.
The methods preached actually help prevent back injuries, eliminate time off from work, prolong your working career by being pain free while continually providing for your family at your full rate.

They also care about preventing Work Comp claims and settlements at the same time, so preaching safety works both ways.
You get injured on a work comp issue and your pay is reduced. If your living check to check at your full rate imagine how much you have to pull back to survive at reduced pay. It's not pretty as I've seen people have to sell their homes, cars, collectible items to survive.

So the bottom line is not looking if the glass is half full or half empty or the forensic investigation of a companies motives to preach safety but our own overall health and the well being of our backs and to preserve the pain free lifestyle we currently have. There are circumstances to our bad work habits.

I will tell you from 1st hand experience. I have been driving for 20yrs with 8 of those in the freight business. I did stretching and other excercises almost every day. It can happen to anyone and workers comp is a nightmare. Do everything you can to take care of any back issues yourself. My injury is going to cost nothing cash wise through workers comp. Do not expect imediate treatment, for me it was 10 months before any thing besides physical therapy was done. Looking at about another 6 months off work. I do not know how union barns operate on this just my non union barn. I will loose my job if not better in about 8 months, lost my insurace after fmla ran out, There in nothing being contributed to retirement, and living on 70% pay. It is a shame how injured workers are treated I hope no one has to go through this. BE SAFE its no joke.

Are you on a work comp leave?

In regards to Work Comp Injuries, there are state mandated guidelines that must be followed.
What your doctor/specialist recommends needs to be approved first so that slows the process.
It's a waiting game for treatment because of pending approvals. In the meantime, you are doing home therapy and popping narcotics.
It starts off Physical Therapy, Epidural Injection,Surgery, Physical Therapy, FCE and/or WH.

Funny thing is...in the end...what your doctor recommended ends up being the case and the whole work comp journey turns out to be a waste of time for a few people. Sometimes the journey is what's needed for healing. Surgery is the last option.

Ya I had L-4 AND L-5 herniated disk, physical therapy was a waste of time, got a Epidural and then exercise, and I have been lucky cause for the last 15 years since I had problems it has only bothered me a couple times, I go to the Chiro one time a month and exercise, but always worry about the old back. The pain sucks cause it knocks you down to nothing.
Sometimes I think my back got like that from sitting all the time in the truck, cause when I started working a dock at 40 it seemed my back got better, I got stronger, and just felt better from the exercise on the dock. My problem always came about after sitting, not bustin my hump on the dock.

I had a microdiskectemy 5 years ago after months of worthless therapy For a badly bulging disk in my lumbar section.
It was. The best decision of my life, I woke up with no pain what so ever.
Better then I've felt for years prior.
