A port-a-potty truck caused an accident last Tuesday morning which closed down Route 138 and sent one person to the hospital.

The truck, a portable toilet vacuum truck, was traveling northbound on Route 138. Attempting to stop, the truck started to skid and flipped before rear ending the car in front of it. After striking the car, the truck flipped onto its roof, careened into the southbound lane and hit a car traveling in the opposite direction.

The truck spilled the contents of its tank, which was identified by fire officials as clean water and deodorizer. The fluids spilled onto the roadway and into the gutter. Motor oil from the crank case of the truck also leaked onto the roadway. The oil was absorbed separately from the water surface with special hazardous materials pads, according to fire officials.

The driver, Matthew Teotonio, 19, of 1808 Acushnet Ave., New Bedford, was issued a summons for following too closely and failure to use care and caution while stopping.
