XPO | Massive amounts of damage freight

I got you all beat. Our district HR person told a couple of drivers that there was nothing he can do for laziness. The HR person said this after a driver was tell him about what customers were saying about a driver in fact it was 6or7 different customers. So it make me wander why I work hard and care about the customers freight when HR says there nothing they can do about laziness.
Why work hard? Because that is what our parents did and taught us to do. Because somebody needs to set the example. Because hard work is rewarded by more than bonus or being told good job. Because when you do a job, you don't sign XPO, it's your name attached to it. I'd never disrespect my family name by being lazy or not giving my best just because some other slacker does.

I keep hitting the like button! Hit the nail on the head driver!

Part of the problem though Cat, is that probably not enough were raised that way. Believe me. My dad raised me that way. Respect, solid work ethics, do the job right. But it does get frustrating when you have the majority on the "other" team.

We are definatly raising a entitlement society. As a parent I drill work ethic into my two teenagers. I'm doing my best to raise God fearing, hard working members of society!

This was always a difficult one for me at Con-way. I was raised to work hard and do the job right the first time, which I did my entire time while at Con-way. But it did get disheartening when myself and the other hard working dsrs were heaped with more work every day while those who did as little as possible were allowed to skate. All the time. There was NO punishment for clock milkers or lazy workers. Ever.

So in other words nothing has changed since XPO has taken over...

Initially when xpo bought Conway...xpo brass had no clue how to run a trucking company. Sooooooo, xpo kept all of Conway's policies, people and procedures in place; good, bad, or indifferent. Now that the xpo brass has had time to sit back and analyzed their acquired LTL biz, things are beginning to change. There is a whole raft new bench marks that they have put into place to make the company more successful.

Bottom line: yeah xpo is still kind of like the way Conway was w/ Conway's mantra..." No matter what you do, it's never hard enough, fast enough, nor good enough." The only difference now is that xpo has put , is putting, and will continue to put new ideas into the company to scale it up, increase EBIDTA, and make it more profitable. XPO's new mantra is 'Results Matter.'

Let's hope that all our hard work everyday 'matters' w/ corporate taking good care of us like thy said that they would.

That is a highly dubious statement.
Actually Stark Monkey, he also says he is 100% damage free with Conway XPO as well. Should that be a dubious statement ? I am just saying he gets good service from others as well an XPO. However with this talk, he will have to take a closer look at who is hauling his freight. My advise is and was , do not change anything because all is working well now. Which can mean that customers and family of the customers can read this and pass what they read. I was not being unkind to XPO, just stating the truth.[/QUOTE]

Can't be afraid of your shadow. Or you can. Your choice I guess. Chow Baby!

As I have read about my comment on "Wander why I work so hard and care about my costumers freight" I going to respond to some of the comments left.
If those of us that are intrinsically motivated stop caring about our customers (internal and external), we are done for sure!
You are correct. I just passing on what was said by someone in HR. To me that shows some in the management/office don't care at all when there is a policy on poor work performance.

yes my parents taught me that and one other thing, Don't get screwed over. As an employee that has under 2yrs and was basically told in a round about way you are not worth a raise when raises were given out in April my hard work and set the example went right out the window. I do my job and don't go above or beyond that because if I ever want a big laugh at work I just look at the employee of the month plaque on the wall and trust me I don't need my name on that to prove my families name or work ethic

you hit the nail right on the head. It is disheartening when the hard worker keeps getting screwed by management because they have no balls and take the easy way out.

I have seen the poor performance get reward by lighter work loads and easier runs, hell even no dock work. So I say again Why do I work so hard and care?

In my 25+ years of driving a truck I have never seen a sorrier bunch of mangers then what we have at XPO. they are so afraid of calling someone out or question them on why it takes then so long. Hell this company wont even follow a driver around. Year ago when I work in a union shop they followed us all the time and had no problem call us out when someone was screwing off. This company needs to reach down and grab what little balls they have and start call out the clock milkers and lazy workers because what I and a lot of other driver see is that the milkers and lazy workers get the easier and lighter work loads.

Is that what we teach our kids then? If you feel under appreciated at work it's ok to do the minimum? Why not go to work everyday with the attitude of being the best employee your boss has, and if you don't like the results, find a new employer. If you're good, and I assume 25 years of experience has made you good, then leaving sends more of a message than staying. Either way you have already quit! You either quit and leave or quit and stay, but if you quit and stay you hurt your fellow drivers.

And my barn is full of the same sentiment, including me. This push you to the limit that XPO is expressing is going to back fire drastically. People definitely are tired of managements willingness to treat employees as sub- human good for nothing cheats. I too, give them an honest day, nothing more nor will I go more.

What wrong with doing the minimum? I do what the company pays me to do no more and no less. In this type of driving job bending over backward gets you no were. These types of companies run with seniority list, union or not, and when the HR guy says there nothing he can do about laziness well then going above and beyond is not worth my time or effort.
Leaving does send a message. The last two jobs I left never saw it coming and we shocked I was quitting and would take me back tomorrow, but here at XPO they will show were the door is because somewhere in there number your barn is overstaffed.

I see you have an OD pick so I guess you work there. I think they have their own thread go type there if you don't like what being said here.

I remember when the company started the dockworker hiring blitz. I met a gentleman that had previously worked at Old Dominion. He said it was night and day compared to working the dock at OD. Where OD demanded the care of their customers freight, Con-Ways' Modus operandi of, "just jam it in" was a shock to him. Cross dock does not work if you must adhere to a score card that will punish you for ensuring the customers freight is un-damaged, due to having only enough load trailers to fit the freight by cube and weight. How many times has a line driver heard this, " I don't care if there is still three drivers from your barn here, you only have one trailer left to load into, your just gonna have to rework that trailer". Plus OD does not jam pack sub service trailers, that seem to always arrive late. The way we run our operation of P&D during the day, and linehaul at night, does not cut it for a nationwide LTL carrier. Works great for a regional carrier. Some of these LTL companies run P&D all day and night, and pump out line runs all day and night.
The freight assembly centers have also become a cesspool of people standing around not producing. These are the same drivers that bitch and complain about working to many hours. These are the same idiots that seem to damage the most amount of freight. A happy customer is a return customer. To many idiots are messing up our golden egg.

That has had me stumped from day one. If you don't damage freight you don't lose customers ,you don't need salesman, you don't need to advertise. You can then handpick freight and maximize cube?weight and then be so profitable you can then cut half of upper management, becoming more profitable and paying drivers and dock workers so much above the average ltl pay scale they will be leaving UPS parcel in droves. All this because someone in upper management did something as simple as take care of the customers freight like they told them they would. LOL.does not seem to complicated to a simpleton like me. Let me guide you in the right direction upper management. Pay attention now and see how its done. Joe the dsr or dock worker is getting ready to take an oversize skid off a trailer clearly marked must use long blades. He than attempts to remove it with short blades destroying that freight and the freight under it. Fos comes up to him and terminates him on the spot escorting him from the yard. Joe the dsr or dockworker is moving a two thousand lb skid of buckets talking on the cell phone in 100 degree heat with a hoodie on to hide Bluetooth headset, turns corner to fast and dumps skid. Fos comes up to him and terminates him on the spot escorting him from the yard. ECT ECT ECT Because we are making 37.00 an hour driver and 27.00an hour dockworker ,I will guarantee we will never damage freight again. Is that a simple fix or what!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To your point , we had an old forklift that was sold away for a couple hundred dollars. It ran like a top but it was old. Before it was sold the Terminal Manager was asked : "Why not keep it and attach long forks to it? These are more stable than extensions ..." - the TM said no , he was worried about freight being damaged by the longforks if someone forked freight behind a regular length skid.

Insane. You are the management! Make the price of stupidity and ignorance so high that idiots think twice before doing something stupid or ignorant.

Where most of the frustration comes from is we know who the problem people are and management knows as well and has known for YEARS. If management ignores these people ( the F--K UPS ) then how can they continue to ask the good people to do anything? They can't.

Sounds like a plan to me, but we all know it will never happen!

Unfortunately , you are right. After working here long enough it feels like few things change that are obvious , easy to see problems.

I hold out hope though - this new ownership came in and cut LEAN right off the bat.

Hopefully , instead of trying to force something to work that doesn't ( LEAN ) we can adapt some of the things that work that our competitors use. Putting more of our own freight on our trailers with our drivers. Having more accountability and less management. Paying OT after 8 and 40 companywide. Let those won't do the job correctly go elsewhere. ( get rid of the F--K UPS )
