Driver was trying to avoid separate wreck

A 65-year-old Arizona truck driver died Saturday after trying to avoid a two-car accident on the northbound lane of Interstate 55, shutting down the roadway for more than six hours.

Shortly after the collision, Tyson Foods driver William C. Iftiger moved into the left lane to avoid Brown’s car. After passing the vehicle, he attempted to move back to the right lane and sideswiped the car, Boyd said.
The impact caused the 2004 Volvo 18-wheeler to swerve back to the left, where it struck the guard rail of the bridge.

“The truck rode the guard rail. The further it went, the further over the guard rail it went,” Boyd said. “When it came to rest, the trailer was hanging over the bridge and the tractor was on the ground below.”
