Almost 20 years ago, Saia placed an ad looking for a line driver at my barn. The city guys had first choice at the job and they all turned it down. I applied and started line haul my first day. Twenty years later, I'm still thankful that those city guys turned it down. Now, some of those same drivers keep asking me when I am going to retire so that they can take my spot.
Has it been all roses, Hell no on a weekly basis, but what job is except for the guy that works in the rose bush field and he probably wants to stick a fork in his eye every now and again.
If he was looking at the city side, this what your friend turned down. $28.10 an hour, with OT after 45 hours, and probably looking at another company wide pay raise in July. A five day work week with no forced weekend and holidays off. A decent health plan, 401-k with company match, and a pretty good vacation and personal days off package. The equipment is fairly new to new and there is no junk freight. The thorn, in all of this, is how many hours will the company allow when freight slows down during certain parts of the year. If he was looking at the LineHaul side, then that's where the money is along with the same benefits but certainly more hours and, if you work the system, end up in a hotel a couple of nights a week.
Your friend has the chance to get in on the ground floor and let accumulating company senority open doors for him or twenty years later he may be kicking himself for not hiring on.

And yet he may just be afraid of change and stuck in his comfort zone. Kind of hard to grow like that but I would be just speculating why he turned it down. Honestly I don't know or care. It's his loss and someone else's gain.

In 1993 i went to work for Jevic in 2008 we closed, somewhere along the line YRC brought us a paired Jevic and saia together ,2 years before we actually closed saia tried to close is down, the eventual did happen
I'm at a great place now
Well let me just say this at 50 years old how many more times do you really want to jump around and with three weeks vacation coming up and number 15 out of 45 I think it's just a better place to stay where you're at this point in life, we get overtime after 45 also

Sounds reasonable to me. Good luck to you and be safe.

So the question that everyone is asking is have they hired or transferred in everyone they need? I think that's the answer most have been looking for.

Regarding Harrisburg (Mount Joy), this is what I can confirm. Saia is leasing the former NEMF terminal, 55 doors and in really good shape. This terminal was closed when the crunch began and the service area was split between the larger terminals in Camp Hill and Lehighton. Many of us near-and-dear to NEMF feel the closing was a mistake and we now wish we had it back as we are facing some capacity issues at the other terminals.

It's my understanding this terminal will open May 1. There are about 40 brand new trailers sitting in the yard. I believe Saia already has some sales reps on the street as of last week. The rumor is that Saia will operate out of here for about 18 months and then move to a new facility to be built in the Harrisburg area. They already have the land; don't know where.

For those who know the area, we peddled from Middletown west to Columbia, south to Quarryville and Parkesburg, east to Reading and Pottstown, north to Lebanon and Jonestown. The terminal is located right off 283 which provided easy access to anyplace. Working here was a lot of fun.
